Default ST170 Speedometer

Hi all sorry for sounding a bit dim but, recently when changing my speedometer on my st170 I noticed behind there was a wiring loom with a grey connector plug. This had been disconnected probably by a former owner. What is this lead for and do I need to connect as the clocks seem to work fine without it ?

Does the engine light come on when you start then go out after? If not, could be that the light was on and to hide it it's been disconnected?
