Default MK1 Focus 1.6 engine stalling?

This morning when slowing and dipping the clutch to change down to second gear to turn into a side road my engine cut out and hence the power steering didn't work and luckily i managed to re start it in time to carry on driving.

It also does this when approaching lights and dipping the clutch before coming to a halt the engine will die. This is happening more often, once or twice a week maybe. The battery is a Bosch item, relatively new and my voltmeter is showing high 13's/low 14's most of the time and it doesn't struggle to start in a morning.

Can anyone diagnose the problem?

Battery/alternator perhaps?

Cheers.

Sounds like the idle control valve is sticking. You could try cleaning it but I'd replace it.

On the 1.6 the idle air valve is on the front of the manifold

OK fellas thanks for that

It's also beginning to jerk sometimes. Last time it did this i changed the coil pack but that didn't help so i cleaned the MAF sensor with electrical contact cleaner. This seemed to do the trick as i was concerned that it was coated with the 'tacky' spray that i'd coated a pipercross panel filter with so i changed it for a K&N one so i suppose the coating off that could have done a similar thing over the last couple of years?

Lastly, best place for a new idle control valve?

Cheers guys...

Can anyone advise the best way to go about cleaning the idle control valve as Ritchie mentions?

Which cleaners?

Will i need a new gasket?

Thanks in advance...

Soak it in brake cleaner overnight then a very light oiling with wd40.
