Ford Focus Mk1 (Pre-facelift). 2004. 1.6 Zetec.

Not currently a major issue, although i'd like to have it looked it...

Changing between 1, 2 & 3 when the car is moving (clutch fully down and disengaged), feels clunky/notchy. No grinding. Gears stay in. No problem when stationary. Gears slide in and out easily. Possibly worse when cold, but still there even when warmed up good and proper after a 25 minute drive (having been through all the gears).

Clutch has a good bit of meat on it. 1/3 to mid level bite point.

All gears also feel a little 'baggy'. Always need to be a little careful to not go from 4th to 1st. Cables might need tightening?

Any advice? Would a lower viscosity oil/oil change help?

This is the only thing that's bothering me about the car. Now the tracking is sorted and I have new front tyres the car is a much better drive.

Gbox fluid change would be a good call anyway considering it'll be 10yrs old now. Cables may be worn also

In neutral does the gear lever spring back to centre if pushed left to right across the neutral gate?

Mk1 Focus has a spring at the base of the gear lever that commonly breaks so that the gear lever loses it's self-centreing action.

Pretty easy to fit, just remove the centre console and the lever, few screws hold the lever into the base, then a matter of fitting the spring on the lever at the base so it springs both ways.

Who mads this. Our focus gear lever has just snapped the spring on friday. Ive just bought a second hand gear stick.

I've fitted quite a few of those springs over the years Glenn!

Right, yes. Left, no. Its knackered. Pulled the surround up and there is a piece of the spring rolling around underneath! So that's probably the bagginess sorted.

Is it easy just to remove the shifter by undoing the three or so screws, whipping it out and changing it?
