I got this car as an early graduation present way back in December 2003 and it remained relatively stock until just recently. I have been building the car over the last 2 years and it has been a great ride. First I turbocharged the stock engine and continued to DD the car for about a year with a respectable and Mustang GT killing 265whp 265wtq.

10 and 12 psi

After finally picking up another DD (2001 Escape) I decided to push the stock motor and found its limit after a few weeks at 340whp 340wtq. But not before running a 12.7@ 114 on about 300whp and some old drag radials.

video, of coarse there is no time because as any of you who have ever been to KDS know, the timing lights don't ever work for very long!

300whp time slip

Here is what it reads:
Reaction: .092
I1: 2.096
I2: 5.584
I3: 8.345
MPH (I3): 88.235
I4: 10.641

E.T.: 12.712
MPH: 113.467

After the motor let go, I built up a junkyard motor with the usual forged pistons and rods and a custom ported head by me. The head alone landed me a respectable 30whp gain with stock cams. With the stock cams and intake manifold still in place I made 457whp and about 450wtq on 110octane and 30psi of boost.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hd1DZvK1Fec

After realizing that, that was a shit load of torque, I decided I needed to get new cams and intake to transform some of that torque into big horsepower and I think I succeeded. After swapping the stock parts out for some Comp stage 2 cams and custom intake manifold I ended up with 50 more whp and 20 less ftlbs with 2 less psi of boost to make 504whp and 430wtq! I think that is pretty respectable for a zetec powered Ford Focus with a GT3076r.

Time slip but only on 21-22psi or about 420whp and 93octane.

Video from the next day, faster 60' but slower 1/8th because the track sucked and I was spinning 2nd

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDI6uViQkok

Now if I can just get the weather to cooperate so I can get back to the track for a new time!

Recently, I sold my previous Turbo kit and decided it was time to build the most bad ass, no compromise turbo kit ever to be installed on a street driven focus. The result, I think, was incredible. See the top for pics. Even more impressive was the power it unlocked. A best of 561whp and 434wtq. It still made more than impressive numbers at low boost as well. Here are a few dyno charts at 9, 16Psi respectively.

Below is a comparison of my old setup with the same GT3582r but different Kit and intake manifold. The red line is the new kit at 25psi, and the blue line is the old one at 27psi with 3" DP and no exhaust. As you can tell the new kit is making significantly more power on less boost, also note the gain in spool. I think some of this can be attributed to the new intake manifold, but also the removal of the old restrictive 3" Down pipe.

WOW, thats immense, what an engine!!!
I am in the middle of turbo chargin my Focus ST170 (SVT) the aim is 400BHP on pump fuel and i was planning on using the GT35R turbo but after seeing your figures im thinking the GT35R turbo may be a bit overkill for 400bhp

Defiantly overkill for 400bhp, I would go with the gt3076r it will give better spool characteristics and that will still give you some room to grow. It would easily be good for 500bhp.

I stopped keeping record of it a long time ago, I don't like to think about it. I did port the head and build the engine myself so that saved me a lot. And the fact that the engine is nothing special and not very radical at all. A very good friend of mine owns a shop here in the states and he was nice enough to lend a hand on the things i could not do myself, like all the pretty welds he laid down. Most of the parts are available for purchase though him. the link is in my sig.

That was last year on 93 octane and a different kit. It was about 450bhp give or take.

Last time I went to the track I was around 540bhp. I was having trouble hooking up, I only ran 11.6 but it was at 132mph.

Thumbs up

I'm not knocking you by the way, you have achieved some excellent results there

If you can get it to hook up I'd expect a late 9 @ 150 with those power figures comparing it to some of the guys here in europe

My car is not lite enough for 150mph trap. The guy doing 150mph is in a fiesta that is 2100lbs with him in it. Mine is 2750 w/ me in full street trim with most of the interior A/C power steering. My car would need about 700bhp to trap 150.

Just been looking at your inlet manifold, is the first part bolted to the head a standard SVT plastic part? ever had trouble with the manifold parting at this point under boost? What managment are you using? And it looks like a standard MAF sensor your running?
Sorry for the questions.
Got plenty of pictures of my build, its taken 6 months to get to this point and i think its going to take another 12 to finish, will do a build diary when i get a chance.

Yes this is correct, It saved a ton of cash not to have a metal machined flange made. Also it helps dramatically in the reduction of heat soak. No problems with it and running up to 25psi on it so far.

Engine management is the stock computer remapped using SCT software. They are very big in the states, especially with the mustang which is the biggest motorsport market here. Fortunately the focus has gotten some love due to the technology being directly applicable and "trickling down." It uses the all the stock sensors including the MAF and provides complete control over all its functions. The re-map was done by me.

The states does seem to cater for the focus market much better than here, that software by SCS is immense, i was planning on fitting full aftermarket managments but i think im going to give the SCS software a go. More import duty to pay
If your using all the standard sensors how does the standard managment sence boost? You still have the VVT working.

your right, i had it in my head it was the svt focus originally, this is the stumbling block on the ST170 turbo conversion, it has a black oak ecu so the software this guy used to re-map his ecu may not work

I have the standard black top motor.

It doesn't actually read boost, it just measures the amount of air going into the motor. You just use the stock MAF sensor and increase the diameter of the pipe. When doing this you have to re-scale the range of the sensor. It is a little challenging at first especially if you are used to working with a MAP based system, But once you get it all figured out it is actually very simple. Timing is based off load so the more boost you run the more power you make therefore the more load so that is how you can adjust the timing for boost. The biggest problem with it is not a problem at all but the fact that there is so much that can be changed it is hard to know where to start.

Once again i appolagise for the questions, are SCS able to supply you with a start up base map that you can work from?

Yes but in order to do more than 200whp you have to change the size of the pipe the MAF is in which is where it starts to get tricky.

so take the vvt off and use a std blacktop ecu with the scs software...maybe need to get a new inlet cam or lock the st one.

I actually have a spare Blacktop engine in the garage with a recently rebuilt head. Will the inlet cam from the blacktop drop straight into my ST170 head? i really really wanted to keep the VVT though
