ST170 duratec's thought they were strong engines...
'Thinking' about buying my friends 52 st170 with 66k, but have just been looking what to offer as it needs taxing and a service and found a few that have needed new engines :0/
i thought they were pretty built proof? no?
what normally goes on them?

Mine had done 77k and hadnt had a easy life and was still running strong
Its mainly the flywheel you need to worrk about since it needs changing when you change the clutch and not cheap at all!! Engine wise only problem i had was the IMRC but thats normally a easy fix

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
not heard of anyone destroying an engine, as said the clutch and flywheels main issues.

i've never heard of major engine problems on them, just the usual imrc, lamda sensors, fuel pump, etc, etc.
NO engine is bullet proof though!! if you don't look after it it WILL break!

Problem is ST170's are now getting within the price range of young kids so instead of most 170's being well looked after serviced etc they are now being owned buy kids who dont look after them and rag the shit out of them which will end in problems. Mine has oil and filter changes every 1000miles, is maintained regardless of cost and never misses a beat, apart from the clutch i have not had one problem with it in 3 years.
They can handle a turbo producing over 300bhp on stock internals, to me thats a strong engine

i reckon its mostly down to the shitty sump losing oil and a hard corner at speed, thats how i fucked mine 2.0 zetec not a 170 but same bottom end oil light flickered on for a few split seconds then a month down the line started knocking
