Default mk1 zetec 1.8 problems help please

ok, recently bought a newer ford (other one is a mk1 escort) has a little ding but was otherwise very clean and dirt cheap

however, since it was delivered have not got it started, first off batt was dead (properly dead not even the clock light up) so i swapped batt for the one from the escort, everything light up, and the engine cranked over but still didnt start

read up and found that there is a fuel cut off switch in the drivers side foot pannel, tried to press that and seemed already pressed

also i cant hear any pump, should i be able to?

any help mucho appreciated

heres a pic (or 2) including my mk1

with a £12.50 wing later

and here is my mk1 at bromley pageant

thanks

Ian

bet when you get that diving your gonna find suspension damage!

engine wise, check al the fuses first. if you listen carefully you should hear the fuel pump prime for a few seconds, if not then thats the first thing to sort.

nope sorry mate, am in hospital at the mo so cant check my haynes manual. i think both fuse boards tell you which fuse does what though (should be on the inside of the lid.

i'd check them all though anyway as its been in an accident might have blown a few.

well phil, i took your advise i pulled every fuse, checked and replaced, found 3 blown ones (all minor like reversing light ect)

i then pressed the schrader type valve on the end of the fuel rail to see if ther was fuel pressure, there wasnt!!!

so i swapped some relays around, no change, pulled plugs off things and reseated them, nothing, routed around under the back seat found the plug for the in tank pump, but dont know what wires do what, the red and black wires (logical choice) show no power, are these the pump wires??

looks like i am going to have to buy a haynes book of lies

hope the hospital visit isnt to severe

i would have thought red would be live and and black earth so you could put a multimeter across them and get someone to switch the ignition on to see if you have power getting to the connector. if its not getting power then its prob the relay but i dont know which relay it is.

did you check both fuse boxes?? on in the engine bay and one behing the glove box.

hospital visit was very major. knee realignment surgery as my knee caps havnt fused so are in 2 pieces, the sit too high( not in the groove that they should track in) and the tendon that attaches to my shin bone is too far over so pulles my knee cap off to the side. it was almost a 2 hour operation. had my right knee done end of may and left knee done yesturday morning. was in 2 nights with my right knee but only in one night with my left knee. am back home now. think that must be a record

in a bit of pain now though

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!

not supprised you are in pain, although at least you know that (hopefully) the worst is over and things will onyl get better

i did swap some relays about, and did check both boxes, i did manage to unplug the pump and attach a multimeter onto it, but saw no volts, also checked the cut off switch, all conducts, although only read 6v going into the switch (assume it goes to a relay or something)

battery is now pretty low so is on charge, hopefully my wishbone will turn up tomorrow so i can get that fitted at the weekend, and hopefully find a bumper and a headlight too (or a bumper and 2 headlights so i can face lift it)

yeah the worst is over so long as the pain doesnt get any worse haha.

face lift headlights use different connectors mate so a bit of rewiring wil be required.

hopefully your relays are ok and its just the battery needs a good charge over night or something. you could try wiring the pump direct to the battery just to test the pump is working. if that works then get the batery back in the engine bay and start fault finding.

Make sure the battery you have put in is a silver cadmium one as the smart charge system will play silly buggers if it isn't! As for the fuel pump not working, could try giving it a wallop with something as you turn the ignition on and off, may have siezed if its been sat for a while.

Also, take the plastic trim off round the fuel cut off switch and make sure the button is fully pressed in. Would be a bit of a coincidence if the fuel pump packed up just as it crashed!

yeah thanks rich, i did pull the switch and test it all, only had 6v going into the switch which i fault was odd, will get a wireing diagram so i can chase the pump wire back to the sorce and check all things on the way

battery i have no idea if it is a silver cadium one or not, got it last year new and use it in the mk1 escort (when it lives)

just looked up the cost of a haynes manual, £20 now, dont think i have payed more than £5 before, including a mk1 escort twincam/rs manual

oh and phil thanks for the heads up on the facelift stuff, will be sure to cut the plug wires if i do find one in the right colour, with a good bumper (fat chance if the breakers i went to yesterday is anything to go by)

Check the CPS, this is on the side that has got hit, if no signal from this the fuel pump won't prime, also there will be no spark. Fuel pump fuse is number 12 but doubt this would have blown.

As said be sure to get the right type of battery, most likely the current one just needs charging.

thanks martin

battery was charged i just flattened it trying to start it several times

checked all fuses, checked the big buggers with a meter to and all fuses are good

CPS? (cam posistion sensor?) not sure on spark, was going to try that last night but after discovering no fuel pressure and no pump concentrated on that

Yes fuel pump needs CPS input for it to prime so check this.

well, its all sorted

thanks for al your help,

bought a haynes book of lies, identified what wire is the pump power wire, put a meter on it, and only read 7v, odd i thought, so i chassed the diagram back and it goes from the pump to the inertia cut of switch (which i know was good) from there it goes to the fuel pump relay, i had swapped this with the main beam relay which i know worked, then i saw that there is a main ON relay, basically a bigger relay that powers all the small relays, swapped this wth the same one for the rear screen heater, and bingo, turned the key, pump primed up, car fired right up and pured like a kitten, very happy bunny

so just the rest to sort now

well, wishbone finally arived monday (was due to be delivered on friday but the temp DHL driver they had ditched the van on the first delivery)

bit of a pain to fit, wishbone looked original but did it all, found a bent ARB Link so took it off untill the new one arives, and took it for a drive, and it is all good, good gearbox, clutch is good, no noises and everything works nicely

now i need to get a stereo fitted (and maybe an mot logbook tax ect)

anyone got any comments on the ford 6006/e units? do they play cd-r/rw's?

thanks guys

And yes they do play cdr discs
