In 09 models, the EGR is detachable and does not require manifold removal (real pain as the exhaust has to go first then intake). I dont have too much experience with this one but the main thing is that it needs a proper cleaning not just spraying with carb cleaner.
More importantly, you have to check whether its the EGR thats causing problems. Did you check fault codes? Frozen EGR is usually shown as EML light on.

I can help you but you would have to get codes. You can try the dials trick - press the dials reset button while turning ignition on. It should be explained on the forum how to get codes.

MKI - day trip reset button (next to the mileage display)
MKII - day trip reset button - indicator stalk.
Press it and turn ignition on holding it. Hold it for a 2-3 seconds and release it. There will be a new sign on your mileage display. Keep pressing reset button till you get to one with "DTC" - read codes is you can (4 digit).
BTW - where are you from?

Please send the photos and I will show you how to undo it. It's quite easy on yours.
Injectors on your 09 tdci are made by Siemens and I have not seen them going before.
Knowcking noice can be a DMF which even now is crap...but even more expensive crap than old ones.

EGR body itself is a part of the intake manifold and as such cannot be completely removed, but as you see on photos, the valve can be removed, by undoing 4 black bolts (there are 3 on the first photo).
Clean the valve and clean the body.

hi ...yes i think the valve is incorporated in the manifold ...but when you remove the 4 bolts you find only a rotating spare no valve look at this photo:

Hi. Having trouble locating EGR in 2005 focus 1.8 tdci! Disconnected the electrical part and removed 4 bolts to reveal brass cork screw type thing which is reluctant to come out. Should I persist in trying to remove this or is there another way in???
As you can probably tell I'm not too car savvy, so any explanation will have to be blow by blow please.
Car is emitting clouds of white smoke on start up and is reluctant to start on cold days - got someone to check for fault codes and it threw up EGR. After taking things apart and putting together again, fault code has changed to glow plug!! and now have the engine management light on and car is in limp mode. What is going on???? Can anyone out there help??

Does one need to have access to work under the car to complete this job or is it all done from above ?
Is the turbo easily accessible once the manifold is removed or are other parts preventing it from being removed ?
I have a 2006 mk2 ford focus sport 1.8 TDCI, I think it is the same engine you have ?
thanks
