Default Focus 4 Dr Saloon Rear Heater

Sorry for this incomplete post (Technical Details) but I just stumbled across this Forum and don't have the technical details to hand, I'll add them later.

I have a 1.8 Ford Focus 4 Door Saloon Ghia 52 plate and the rear heated windscreen has packed up, I located and checked the fuse but it does not appear to have blown.

I have been quoted about £250 to repair it but thought I'd have a go myself first.

I seem to recall that it may have failed after the RAC attempted to help me get into the car after I locked the keys in the boot. He managed to get the windows down but the next step was to tackle the wiring in the rear footwell he uncovered the carpet but before he did any cutting the missus turned up with the spare key.

Before i splash out on a Haynes Manual is there anywhere I can get wiring diagrams online to troubleshoot this problem? Any tips would be helpful.

Could well be related, when you push the switch you should hear a click from behind the dash, if this happens it shows the relay to be working, so will be problem with the wiring or the screen itself but it should clear a little so is a power issue, the price seems excessive to me I would have a look but your a bit far from me.

I'm afraid I had been getting my Front and Rear Heater Buttons mixed up.

I thought the button with the Pie Shaped Screen was the Rear and the Square Screen the front however whilst changing the Rear Heated Screen Relay (No 25 in the Central Fuse Box) it appears that it was working all the time (the relay that is)

When I press the Square Screen Button (Rear Heated Screen) the relay clicks and the light comes on (The engine has to be running) but the rear screen does not heat up.

When I press the Pie shaped button (Front Heated Screen) there is no click the light on the switch comes on and the internal lights visibly dim. They do not dim when the Rear Screen Heater is switched on.

I have changed the Relay and the Fuse but the Rear Heated Screen is still not working any idea how to test from here, I have a multimeter and I'm not afraid to use it !!!!

I know on the new shape focus the connections on the front screen are under the plastic scuttle panel (the plastic panel that the wipers come out of), basically water gets in there and the connectors can go rusty. Maybe thats something to look at?

Ok I found the rear heated screen connector there is a small plastic cover to right of the side covering above the parcel shelf as you look when sitting on the back seat facing rearwards. Its a pain to get to so I ended up removing most of the plastic trim.

I disconnected the feed wire yellow/green (I think) and with the rear heated screen switched on and a multimeter set to 20v one probe connected to the feed wire the other earthed on the rear door connector bolted to the rear wheel arch I got no reading.

I have followed the cabling to just under the front dash and can see no visible damage. The relay clicks and the fuse is fine, there is 12v being fed to the fuse but I have not checked the voltage to the relay.

Looks like the screen is OK but its not getting power , I suppose I need a wiring diagram or take it to the garage??

You sure it was the live you found and not the earth? I think they should be on opposite sides of the glass, you might have found the earth connector, try the other side.

Easy way to check if its earth or not is check if you have continuity between the plug you have found and the door latch, with ignition off!
