The alloy upper sump (called 'lower crankcase' by Ford) does add stiffness to the lower block. It also incorporates the windage tray instead of the sheet metal one of the 'silvertop'. The RS one is also modified for the turbo oil drain and the cam cover cyclone separator drain.
The steel oil pan is the same for all Focus 1.8/2.0 engines (inc ST170 and RS), but slightly different to the 'blacktop' Mondeo, although that will fit a Focus install (not visa versa).
Why a steel pressing costs that much if its a common problem. Must be the same accountancy as the auxilary belt tensioner.
