Default 1400 upgrade to an 1800?

A mate of mine has a nice little focus 1400, he's been having loads of problems with it, so I semi jokingly suggested he buys an 1800 zetec I have.

Now the engine I have is complete with the ECU, the loom, the inlet and exhaust manifolds, all the sensors, pretty much everything.

Is it as straight forward as it would first appear to swap engines? Would we be able to run the 1800 ecu in the 1400? As the 1400 has Pacs etc? can we bolt the box from the 1400 on the 1800? I assume as the 1400 appears to sit further down and angled we'd have to use different engine mounts? maybe from an 1800 focus?

Or is it far more complicated as in we'd have to use an 1800 focus ecu/loom/box etc?

Any advice greatfully recieved

Hi mate,

I have seen a few people do this mod on the ffoc, from what i can remember its a pain in the ass because your changing from a Zetec S engine to a Zetec E, i think you need

Engine
ECU
The loom for under the bonnet
Engine sensors
Maybe the loom for inside the car ( coz the ecu might have a different plug im not sure tho! )
Engine mounts
Full exhaust system ( the 1.4 exhaust from the cat back wont fit the 1.8 manifold )
Auxiliary ( like water pipes for the rad and that sort of stuff )

I think for the 1.8 engine you need an IB5 Gearbox, but your friends 1.4 will have a IB5 already

I’m not sure what else you would need because ive never seen this dont in person + you will have to tell the insurance company you have changed the engine, you might what to talk to them to see how this would effect your insurance policy

if this is lew your on about his best bet is to just sell it and buy a new car.
the conversion is a lot of expense and hassle. and the car isnt worth that sort of investment

Pretty much got everything Steve, depends what he'd get for it surely? if it's not running right he'll not get much for it... So he'll then not have much to put towards a new car...

I had planned to put a 1.8 in my 1.6 but when I priced it all up etc its not worth doing as for a little more money you can just buy a newer 1.8 with more reliability.

its not stupidly hard as above loom ecu etc so the car owuld need to be stripped but for the cost for a small move he is better selling and buying an st170 there very chheap now
