frs - hesitating and stalling
Mine is an early car, and original aside from a K&N, recently I've been having a problem with it it hesitating on a trailing throttle, and if I de-clutch it stalls, but if I give it some welly it seems to clear and hurtles towards the horizon (a bit embarrassing in heavy traffic!). It feels almost as if it's suffering from fuel vapour lock. Now this may be related to some over-enthusiatic cleaning of the engine bay a couple of weeks ago when I managed to get some water down past the spark-plug covers, I warmed the engine up and let it steam off, and it's only since then that this has occurrred. Would new plugs and leads sort it, or can you think of something else I should look at before I hand it over to Ford to rape my wallet?
Cheers all.

Well I had this same problem, try turning your heater off and make sure its turned to the foot position. This stopped mine from stalling.
It started doing it again after this, weeks and I had the idle valve and throttle body replaced under warranty.

Thanks Tony, I'll give it a try - coming up to the 62.5k service so will mention idle valve etc to them - gonna be expensive 'though 'cos mine's out of warranty!

Completely standard - I'm wondering if I've cooked the ECU with my water shenanigans? I tried tonyk's suggestion and it hasn't helped. It only seems to do it once it's warmed up, and it can happen in any gear, beteen 1,800 and 3,200 revs (i.e where you use it most in day-to-day driving). Please help, it's doing my head in! Where once I had a lovely smooth and responsive car I now have a complete pig!

Ta, I will give them a try. I was wondering (drunkenly at the time!) if the misfiring caused by the water around the plugs had confused the ECU in someway - but thinking about it that's daft. It's definitely mechanical, and heat related. I'll figure it out . . .

Vss is vehicle speed sensor, try a self diagnostic check and see if you get any dtc codes.

Sorted . . .
Ahem, have been running the car on BP Ultimate since my route to work changed. Prior to that had been running on Tesco 99 - lots of bang for the money, but . . . Changing to Ultimate (can anyone get Optimax these days?) has sorted the hesitating problem. Thanks for all your help everybody! (There's a lesson to be learnt here somewhere!)
