Watching the video I'd definitely say starter motor.

The glow plug light acts completely normal, it only stays on longer when it's really cold (sub-zero)

Also, my Dad's Mondeo has developed the exactly same fault. Will put a starter motor on myself next week and see if it cures it.

Sounds like the flywheel is banging when its just about to start. Do you put your foot on the clutch when starting the car?

Not sure.... Ill have to do it on auto pilot tomorrow and see.

A friend suggested in the morning running some jump leads from the Fuctus to our big 2.8TD car while it was running and then start the Fuctus. If it started fine, this would indicate a new battery needed. Still the same, a starter.

Cheers.

from a Focus owners guide

STARTING A DIESEL ENGINE
Cold or hot engine
All vehicles
Note: When the temperature is below
-15ºC (5ºF), you may need to crank the
engine for up to 25 seconds. If you
consistently operate the vehicle in such
temperatures, we recommend that you
have an engine block heater fitted.
Note: Continue cranking the engine until
it starts.
Note: You can only operate the starter
for a maximum of 30 seconds at a time.
Switch the ignition on and wait
until the glow plug indicator
goes off.
Vehicles with manual transmission
Note: Do not touch the accelerator
pedal.
1. Fully depress the clutch pedal.
2. Start the engine.
3. If the engine does not start, fully
depress the brake and clutch pedals.

As well as minimum cranking speed before engine will fire, also they have a minimum running speed before throttle pedal operates, it's around 700rpm for arguments sake. So unless the engine is doing the required rpm , the throttle pedal won't operate anyway.

Hi guys... well, started the car this morning and it started within about 3-4 seconds, although it was pretty warm this morning.

I also noticed that I always have the clutch fully down before starting. I even do it on my petrol car for some reason, I just never realised.

So took the starter off and took a few pics for you. I must say it looks pretty good inside, just a little black sludge and very very tiny fragments of swarfe, but each one only just visible....

Off to buy a starter from AutoElectro for £60.

Cheers.

So do I.

We looked at bills last night.

£1950 FOCUS
£85 Crank Sensor
£50 EGR testing
£1000 new fuel pump, belt, injectors testing etc...
£916 injectors fitting x 4

This is a VERY expensive 52 plate Focus, now nicely named the Fuctus.

So, after being told it was £60 for a recon I went to go get one. Turning up they then informed me that they were out of stock of recons but I could buy a new one at a higher price. I don't think they expected me to kick off so much, so they agreed to give me a new one for £60. They tested my old one 10 times. Perfect they said, are you sure you want to spend £60? I laughed as what's £60 on top of £2300!!! Lol.
So...

I have also posted this video as the short squealing sound hasn't gone...

Ill post back up on a cold day.

Thank you.

I can't thank the input you have given enough. Even AutoElectro said it wouldn't be the starter!

Skint but happy now!

Any ideas on the squeal type noise? Loose belt?

That now annoys me! Lol.

Sorry...

Looking forward to a cold spell now! Want to test it!

Squeal is the auxilary belt, have changed tensioners on them before as the springs go weak after a time.. Tensioner is quite expensive ,Ford only part* so I'd live with it...

Pleased the starter is working well.

EDIT* - TPUK list the tensioner on eBay £79.99
