Urgent Help required with Alternator fitting to Focus TDCI 2002
Hi - just bought a tdci and after just 1 week of ownership, the alternator has packed in and am already regretting it (although love the way it drives) :
Took it to my local mechanic who has never fit one before but is saying that the only way of removal is underneath and that involves removal of the undertray, removal of wheels and removal of aircon unit which is right up against it (the alternator is front left of the engine bay). He says he cannot remove one of the mounting bolts without removal of aircon - which may need regassing as well
I was led to believe this was a relatively straightforward job, so any help with this would be very much appreciated on the easiest way to do this. There are some instructions on the internet but the mechanic is saying these must be for cars without aircon

yes, you need to remove the 4 air con compressor mounting bolts and move it to one side a bit, let it dangle gently or support it with an axle stand or something.
Don't disconnect any pipes, you don't need to.
No real need to remove wheels either.
Its quite an easy job really should take no more than 1.5 hours start to finish.

DONT just throw an alternator at it!
you need to see what battery is on it first, and what the smart charge is doing, disconnect the 3 pin plug and it should put out 13.5v, if it does its a smart charge issue, if it doesnt, defo alternator.
from memory its quoted on autodata as a 1.6hr job.
get it checked by someone who knows otherwise it may sting you in the bum
