Mk5 1.3 to 1.7 Conversion [Build Log + Questions]
Hi guys. Its been a while.
Quick info about myself.
Loz Selly
Computer Games Designer - Middlesbrough University
Currently Driving: Mk5 1.3 Fiesta... this project car.
Favorite ford: My Orion Mk3 1.8 Si, Owned her for 9 days, then some jackass took her for a joyride at 3am and smashed her up :/
After driving my Orion (with its gorgeous 130hp) and then getting back into the dreaded Endura-e I have been craving more power, so the logical solution.. The Puma!
After helping one of my best mates with his BMW e38 (dropped some coilovers on for him), i met a guy selling a 1.7 engine with Loom, Gearbox, mounts, ECU and Key chips... for £100 (he just wants rid of it, its done 71k and I've got documented proof + the clocks)
Now I've got myself a new clutch, oil filter, timing kit, gasket set and depending on budget and how much i can get scrap for my Endura-e i may invest in a 4-2-1 manifold and cams.
But before I start the project at the end of the month (when the engine is delivered and i start re-building it) I need to know a few extra things.
The Start of my questions
I've seen and read lots of build logs for the 1.6 - 1.7 conversion, but as I'm going from 1.3 - 1.7 so I'm a bit more in the dark.
So do I need anything else apart from
-ECU + key chips (aftermarket eventually)
-Gearbox (can this be modified? I've heard rumors that you can use focus diesel gears somewhere)
-Engine, ofc
-Mounts. Top and Gearbox
-Puma Torque link
-Loom, I've got the clocks from the puma to go in.
-New parts for the engine (Oil filter, gaskets, timing belt, ARP bolts, Cams, Clutch)
-Puma Driveshafts (I've heard that the 1.3 ones are slightly too small, and can slip out at full lock)
-Airfilter box (I've got an induction kit)
-4-2-1 Exhaust
-Radiator + Coolant hoses (I'm just going to get a new radiator and a full set of silicone ancillary hoses for a 1.6 from Samco.
???
Also is there anything else i could do to the engine, whilst its out of the car? I'm going to strip it and re-paint it, new piston rings, new valve guides and seals, more or less a full re-build. I will document all of this on here with pictures
Anyway, lets hope it all goes well!!
Loz.
p.s pics of the car coming tomorrow (Its raining outside now XD)

Just received the chance to buy a 1959 Ford Anglia 100E and I'm interested in converting to that.
Unfortunetly with the current "State" of this fiesta I wouldn't be able to sell it to match the £1000 asking price of the Anglia.
I recon i could get about £500 for this now, thats if it will pass an MOT
I think If i sort the suspension out and continue with the project i might make the car a bit more sensible and will just have to hope another classic ford pops up for me. Such a shame to let it go but now is not the time for me.
Would have made my parents happy XD Top speed of 72!
Anyway a summery of updates for the coming weeks.
Suspension -> Trying to get some coilovers but i have a set of replacement rear shocks to go on (mine are rusty as hell and leaking)
Poly bushing -> sorted out a front End kit, Rear end kit has been installed over the weekend (pictures due later)
Do the MK3 suspension top bushes fit the MK4/5?
Thats it for now. The Anglia can be found on eBay just search for Anglia 100E and its the one with the picture of the Engine Bay.
