rs 1800 more power.
Hello all.
I would like to get a better performance from my Rs 1800 fiesta without chipping. I have thought about fitting a performance air filter, but have been told it is better to change my maf air sensor with a bigger sensor from a ford 2.0. Is this possible ? If so can anyone give me advise on which sensor I would need. Any help and advise much appreciated.
Cheers Colin.

to be fair if your after performance and your not going to improve the fueling with a chip your waisting your time and money. even with a exhaust/filter you would be looking at about a 5 bhp improvement (if the car was in perfect running condition). it cost me Ł1000 to gain 12 bhp on my 2i

Replacing the paper air filter with a performance filter will cost me Ł30 +.
Can anyone who has changed their filter let me know if they have noticed a marked improvement. Or as Frsjon says is it a waste of money.
It will be interesting to see if anyone recommends a performance filter.
As I have my doubts if it will make any difference also.

The RS1800 already has the bigger MAF etc. To get to the 130PS from the 105PS, they changed the MAF, cams, throttle housing, inlet manifold and ECU, plus fitted oil spray jets under the pistons.
There probably aren't many easy bolt on mods really. You could fit a different exhaust system, a decat if you can get away with it, then look at different exhaust manifold options. Ashley do one I think, you could adapt an ST170 one, or there were a couple of other options around at one stage, been ages since I've played with a Zetec lump. This MIGHT gain you 1/2bhp, but that might be at the sacrifice of torque.
Wilder cams, a mild head skim to raise the compression, plus a proper, mapped ECU might gain you a little bit. Add throttle bodies and you might gain some more. Something like that may be about 150bhp, but that's a guess, as I don't have much experience of 1.8 tuning.
The most cost effective way of increasing performance is probably to find the 2.0 engine from a MK1/early MK2 Mondeo and fit that. You can use 1.8 parts like the sump and oil pick up to convert it so it fits, along with the Fiesta engine mounts and manifolds. The basic engine architecture is the same, so it's just a case of mix-and-matching parts to make it work.
I've had loads of Escorts over the years, including a couple of MK6s with 2.0 Mondeo engines, and it makes a big difference over the 1.8. It feels a fair bit punchier thanks to the torque increase. And if you apply the modifications mentioned earlier, you'll get more power out too.

I want to keep the car and engine as standard as possible.
Eg filters . Many thanks again . Regards Colin.

Replacing the MAF sensor won't do anything!
To improve performance you need to increase the VE, you can do this with a better flow air filter and exhaust, cams etc, after you done this you would need a remap, as the engines requirements would have changed.
It's not all about power, certain mods can make for a better response.
Solely remapping will only make a difference on FI cars, (Gasoline) by allowing a higher boost pressure.

But they do have the benefit of beening able to be washed instead of just thrown away like std air filters.
So they do save you money in the long run on services.

Tbh the is a point to what massivewaggers says, For best buck for power really 2.0 is the easiest way to go but if your not after massive power a 1.8 can be a much more rewarding engine.
Easiest power gain really is turbo as you can do them pretty cheap (a lot less than what it take n/a tuning to get to the same level of power) and thay can be quiet reliable But if you not after big power and just wanna abit more power and do things one stage at a time personally id stick with a 1.8 with looking at the engine rev better and faster, yes will have less power than 2.0 but will rev a dam sight quicker.
Either way if you want to stay n/a here's a list for you regardless of engine cc....
More aggressive camshafts
Head skimmed ported and 5 way valve angle.
Lightened flywheel
St170 spec exhaust system
ported and butterfly cut 2.0 t/b
That will see an easy 150bhp+ in both engines.

No such thing as Performance air filter really, Only time they give more power is when the std one is past it and needed changing.

You can clean some panel filters.
