Default Ford Escort to 1.8 zetec...can someone check my parts list

Hi guys,

Not strictly an Escort but the non-turbo forum seems to be dead...but as some of you may know, I have a Ford Orion mk2 and have been offered a Ford Focus 1.8 (2000) complete car, so im now wanting to put the engine from the focus into my Orion...

The Orion is a 1.3L OHV version so has EDIS control and is a carb model

From what I have read on various threads what I need is;

- Engine
- ECU and complete engine wiring loom with all sensors, including PATS immobilizer

Do I need any of the following?

- Gearbox (mine is currently a 5speed box)?
- Radiator? Fan? anything to help the cooling?
- Driveshafts/hubs etc if I need the gearbox?
- Lambda sensor?
- Fuel filter clips etc

Anything else I might have missed?

From what I have gathered again from various threads...I also need to source;

- RS Turbo Fuel tank - do I need MFI/XR3i EFI, early late spec ect?
- Bigger fuel lines - ERST or aftermarket
- Fuel pump for above fuel tank
- early zetec top rad hose
- Possibly the CVH alternator and belt or change pulleys etc
- Ford yellow fuel pump relay

In terms of wiring, what complications should I expect with the PATS? Is it something I should try to avoid and possibly not take the management and loom out of it?

anything else I need to take into consideration? Anything I have forgot etc?

Thanks for any help

Not sure you will easily use the focus management without having things like the instruments incorporated.

The Silvertop engines are a bit easier to mount than the blacktop in the focus too.

Is this the same for 1.8 engines to? I thought this applied to 2 litre engines only... maybe I should give this a miss

Pats is no big deal and it doesn't need the dash.

You can run most of the Ford engines upto around 2004 with the same principles. St170, St220, Focus Rs, Mondeo Duratec.

Can anyone confirm the blacktop/silvertop theory above? will the blacktop from the Focus work ok in the Orion?

Mate you could mount it on a pallet and run it. So if you can plumb it into the Orion then you can run it with the factory ecu.

Blacktop requires the sump modifying to clear the starter motor and offside drive shaft, the water pump sits closer to the chassis leg and you need to use a idle pulley to change the direction of the Aux belt so the pump turns the correct direction. The bottom hose to radiator also is more challenging to get a nice fit. Blacktop needs a notch cutting out of where the engine mount bolts to on the chassis leg to clear the timing belt tensioner. Blacktop usually needs a bracket making to drop the escort cvh alt bracket down so the water pump outlet and alternator clear each other.

Silvertop Sump no mods, CVH alternator and bracket bolt straight on with just the zetec pulley added to the CVH alternator, then run the aux belt in a simple triangle pattern. Off the shelf bottom hoses are available for a silvertop into a escort rs turbo.

Silvertop easier to fit, but Blacktop is probably gonna be easier to source.

TBH I think im gonna take the engine and see how things go...in the meantime if anyone has any more info/pointers etc then feel free to add them below

Ultimately, the car will change to a Blacktop 2.0 Zetec, but until I have built that engine, this will just fill the hole and provide a bit of extra umph to the current 1.3

What sump is required for the 1.8? or is it a matter of persuasion with a hammer to get it to clear?

I have heard of the idler pulley to change direction, I remember reading it on Karlos' thread.

Do you have any pics of the bit you have to cut out when you say 'Blacktop needs a notch cutting out of where the engine mount bolts to on the chassis leg to clear the timing belt tensioner'?

I also vaguely remember about dropping the alt, I think it was in Karlos' thread to...I will have another read through his thread...

If it all plans out, I may weld in all the new mounts for doing my 2.0 conversion and see if I can put in the MTX75 FRS box at the same time just to save time later when the proper engine goes in

The sump mods on a 1.8 or 2.0 BLACKTOP will be the same as in the guide by Karlos.

After talking to a mate of mine, I think I might bite the bullet and go the full hog while installing the 1.8, put the MTX75 in at the same time which hopefully should solve a few things and mean the physical alterations to the chassis are done when my proper engine goes in.

Just need to get round the management side of things now

Does anyone know if I can use my current fuel sender unit will work in an EFI tank? This is the tank I will be buying http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Fo...be31032&000479

Its for a XR3i EFI Mk4 escort

Cracking price to!

Will I require new tank straps to or will it just bolt up using existing straps?

My website might help, link in my sig. click on the first (missing) picture to enter the 'Escort Upgrades' section. Select 'Engine' from the left hand column and then select 'Zetec'.

The 1.8 focus will be a ib5. Unless you already have a mtx box?

Yes mate I have a Focus RS box here with all the mounts/driveshafts etc ready to bolt in...hence thinking I might as well do the gearbox conversion now so I can literally just bolt the engine in once its built (the proper 2L Blacktop)

Yes mate all the shafts etc, everything is ready to bolt the box in...just need to weld a mount in and mod the chassis leg...everything else is here ready to bolt in...shafts, mounts, linkage tower, master cylinder for the hydro clutch etc

Only issue is I will not have a working speedo....talk about swings and roundabouts!!!

Reason for going for the Focus engine is because its free, Ill be making money on it as once I have taken out whatever I need, I will sell the rest off.

Further to this, I am building a proper 2L CGI Blacktop engine for the car anyway, so any fabrication work involved in getting the blacktop focus in, will play in my favour in the long run as ultimately, there will be a blacktop 2L zetec turbo going in

I think I may have solved my ECU issue now anyway...I think im just going to turbo the damn thing on a budget build and just buy a Megasquirt MS2 ECU and make the loom myself...will solve all issues related to the ECU side of things that way...

Its still in the planning stages at the moment, but looking for CHEAP Escort Turbo parts currently
