this has been talked to death lots of times. even efi is considered old and unreliable although better than mfi. what you want to be looking into is a gen8 ecu conversion.

just do the research. a new loom and new ecu will work out cheaper than an old efi system

That depends. Bar one foible (the system needs priming (basically flicking the ignition between position one and two until the system has pressure in it) before I start it if I leave the car for a month which I suspect is either the fuel accumulator or a minor fuel leak somewhere but I cannot see it so maybe it is the former) my MFI system is fine. It is the one thing about the car that has stayed reliable. Like anything, the systems are now old and need the right attention.

It's not stopping me from looking at standalone ECUs however. Maybe some people scare me off but a number of people seem to be having issues with old systems here. From what I can tell, but I am awaiting a price from Karl GEN8 is not that much more expensive either.

MFI is fine and easy to tune. you can have the metering heads FULLY rebuilt and recalibrated for around 400 quid.

The thing is MFI is outdated and that £400 can be used/put towards modern management, more power, economy and there's a lot more tuners out there for it. My MFI system has been serving me well but i'm slowly gathering the bits to replace it, the only real reason I see that people keep them is for originality.

Agreed Nosmonkey. But why change from something old and outdated to something else old and potentially more unreliable.

While I am sure standalone management will come with less quirks I am sure it will be worth it over simply buying an old EFI system, and with less hassle.

I have a few golden rules when I hear this topic come up. Regardless of your choice:
  1. You must remember there is currently a fault in your system somewhere which may not be overcome by upgrading to EFi
  2. Always start with a known working ECU - Important!
  3. Be meticulous: Clean all of the loom contacts and check EVERY pin for continuity
  4. Check EVERY sensor and coil pack for the correct resistance across the pins
  5. Double check!

Too many people just buy off eBay, fit it and it doesn't work. I spent a considerable number of hours checking mine over and corrected a startling number of faulty cables, as a result it fired up first time after I remembered to fit the earth terminal.

Having said that, you're most of the way to standalone management at that money: a Gen8 boostmonkeys ECU will only be a few quid more.

I'd be temped to run through that list with my MFi setup before shelling out any more cash

I run efi mate with cosworth management etc etc pushing well over 367bhp with proof cant go no more as need a dry sump most probably can turn it up to 400 plus lol for a min then bang no oil as the oil pump shat it self lol

Efi is good as its cheap people say do this do that but it costs loads

My efi runs great never really give me any problems and and gives alot of cars a run for there money lol

Will at least cost you over a grand or two to go with a modern set up lol that's a good one anyway

But up to you really

You buy cheap your fitting cheap then bang you got problem's and you wonder why

You don't say what EFI system it is but for that money I'm assuming it's second hand and probably Ford? You may end up just swapping out one old faulty system for another.
I'd try and get to the bottom of why you are not stating well first, then if you really want to go EFI (which is never a bad thing) look at something new.
