Default back box issues

Right here's goes, I have a mongoose exhaust system which has a 4inch rolled out tip. Now I want it quieter it does my head in on motorways and it's generally too loud. How can I make it quiter? Change the back box? Change the tip for a 2.5ich one? Any advise would be great!

Cheers,

Rick

I had a magnex exhaust with a 4" tip and had the same problem.i went to a scorpion exhaust with 3" rolled out tip and that's made all the difference,I don't think there's much else you can do.

So could just changing the tip to a 3inch make a difference I could send it off to be changed? Or is it the actual back box? Or whole exhaust system?

I was told that changing the tip would make little or no difference.so I just bought another second hand system.somebody else may be able to advise you further.

You could add an additional silencer?

I remember a friend had an ERST that had a big oval shaped backbox with a 2" tail pipe and it was very sedate. Can't remember the brand though. Maybe someone else will.

The reason the scorpion might have made a difference is they have a smaller (more restrictive) diameter pipe inside the silencer.

You could try an exhaust bung which may result in the same difference, or going to a Series 1 type of exhaust box.

Didn't the RST only come with one backbox from the factory and no other silencers? I was under the impression that the exhaust did the silencing.

Magnex is generally quieter than Mongoose. Scorpion may be quieter but for reasons as mentioned above (poor diameter/flow) - IME they are generally just as noisy as Mongoose tho.

Whereabouts in Notts are you m8? If you are anywhere near Stton/Mansfield try giving these guys a shout;

http://www.stainless-exhaust.com/

Phone : 01623 552 262

I can highly recomend them as they sorted my S2 and my mates S1 both for about £50, they love their Fords and go way back so pretty old school. Everything done in house by truly skilled men, no fancy premises (if you go you will see what I mean...lol) - just take a look at the stuff they usually do on the website! If you need any more info give me a shout m8.

My S2 was hanging too low under rear and hitting ground, they took whole sytem off and re-aligned front downpipe, cut extra splits in middle pipe to close up and grip better, put me an additional hanger on rear x member to help keep back box up nice and tight then refitted everything for £40.
My mates S1 was not as bad but he had a 4" tip which he wanted off so they aligned his and replaced the tip with a fresh one about 3" diameter and a bit shorter which looks much better all for £50.
In both cases they did a great job and really took care of the cars.
