weird boost?
Hi all,
Could do with some advice on boost if poss?
I've now rebuilt my s2 and run it in, been pushing it more bit by bit each week and its seems very happy, after a bit of expected tweeks here and there it runs as sweet as a nut!
Question being - what is max boost to run on good fuelling and if fuelling is wrong can it be heard the old fashioned way in the form of pinging / pinking???
I rebuilt my full motor from one end to the other using std mahl pistons, std rods, and ARP bolts. it has a cosworth turbo, kent cam, chipped ecu, uprated actuator, induction kit and a few other mild changes. when I first built it she was running very hot, always in the low red in stand still traffic but never really caused any problem, peaking at 1.2 bar boost and settling at 1 bar which seemed expected for its state of tune. ive now uprated the rad and done a few other things to maintain a regular cooler running temp, never goes over half the gauge what ever, however since running cooler my boost has gone mad! turbo comes alive at about 2500 rpm and creeps up the boost gauge, at 3100 rpm it comes in with a reaaaal aggressive punch reaching 1.5 bar then the waste gate opens and settles at 1.1 bar. obviously the turbo seems to be more efficient at cooler temps and other electrical sensors are most likely coming into play with lower temps resulting in a more aggressive boost.
just wanted to know if before I roughly do my best with settings if any of you guys have experience with play by ear tuning??? years ago I had an r5 gtt running high boost and it was set right to do so but if I ran it a couple psi to high I knew in a split second from the clatter and pinking noise, r5's are on carb so maybe a different game, just wondering if rs turbo's give any signs if to week on boost?
sorry for the long winded post but dyno time is expensive and I am looking to get it as close as poss before hand.
Cheers in advance.....Mike

Play by ear tuning will only end in a melted engine with these mate, take it to someone who knows how to set it up correctly, the fuelling and ignition timing must be set for your desired boost, they do not adjust themselves!
If it isn't right every time you drive you risk destroying all your hard work

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
you may get it to run nicely, 9 times out of ten you will probably make it home. but it only takes that one occasion when you have your foot buried just a little too long, or the fuel quality isn't quite up to par and your left with a big bill. getting it set up by a decent tuner will allow for these variables and he will get the fuelling/timing spot on by monitoring the figures. setting up by ear is ok to get you to a set up, nothing more
