Default Oil separators ; What do they do and which is best

I am debating about improving the breather setup on my car which it seems is not quite up to the job.

What I wish to ask is why the setups like the Bailey and AS separators help matters ; how are they better than the stock setup or simply a purely open breather setup (with the engine venting from the rocker cover). With the latter I can appreciate that they are a messy setup and do little to help crankcase gasses and blowby. The metering head oil part is blanked off on my car so I would most likely either run a hose beneath the the car or into a catch tank.

Also, is there much of a difference between the Auto Specialists separator and the Bailey item or is it much of a muchness? Would the fact that I am running a ZVH change the reasons for why I may require to run a catch can? It is 1.8 in my car.

Page 8 on this link will give you plenty of info, it wouldn't let me cut and paste the info so a link will have to do.

I did some reading myself, thought about it a bit and I can appreciate why they have their use.

Bar the fact that the Bailey mounts more nicely than the AS item I take it that the pair of them both do the same thing just as effectively?

Might be worth talking to Burton power etc its important to get the right set up, if the crackcase is designed to run a oil separator, PCV valve etc and you fit a catch tank system to run the risk of blowing loads of oil out of the rocker cover filling the tank up

No harm in cleaning them every now and then but your engine shouldn't be breathing heavy enough for it to need cleaning if you know what I mean.

On the basis Bailey no longer make them who would you go with in my case Versus? I see AS make one although I also see that some fabrication of the brackets would also be required in addition to some ports being blocked off (I guess the port which goes to the inlet manifold).

I cant give out the make of the new breathers as im not a trader on here.

I can tell you that they are based on the bailey breather with better brackets to mount different places as the bailey bracket is limited.
