Default Seat belt

just took both front seatbelt outta my escort mk4 van
the seatbelt have retracted further than it would be allowed to if it was in the van and now it wont extend
is there a way of releasing it?

Either bolt it back in or hold it in exactly the same way it would sit once bolted, and it should release (its far easier to just bolt in)

I had the same. What you need to do is take off the side cap. It's the thicker cover. You have to pierce two little plastic bungs to snap it off. Once this is done pull the cover off and you will see the mechanism. Simply lift up the little latch and pull it out. Get a good meter or so of belt out. Secure it to something so it doesn't go back in. Slap the cover back on and fit your belt. Just try keep the length because if it retracts you will have to repeat. Main thing is to make sure you take off the right cover as the other side holds the spring and this is tamper proof and not fixable if it comes out.

We'll it nearly took my eye out which isn't fixable ha! Lucky I have a mk2 fiesta here so robbed the belt off that!!
