Default ib5 gearbox for our s2

well
I looked around on the Net and I found out that the ford KA 1.3 have the nearlyest gear ratio that our escort rst s2 ? is that true?

but there are some ka gearbox with front starter housing and some with back starters

we need the front starter housing for our CVH

is it a good choice the ib5 from the KA

and than only have to fit the LSD from the s2 in it ? is it a big job

thanks

The clutch is hydraulic on the ka so a hydraulic conversion would be required, or you could find a mk5 escort front starter ib5 and have ka gears and s2 lsd fitted into it.

You definitely sure you dont want to go hydraulic? The pedal is a lot lighter and not as hard as you would think, There is a guide in this forum for doing the conversion by Karlos G

Changing from BC/B5 to IB5 won't have any effects on the position of the engine!

There were to '95 Escorts with front starter IB5 boxes:

1.4 PTE (late CVH multi-point EFI type)
some of the early 1.6 16V Zetec ones

Both have shorter overall ratios than the S2. Ratios are nearly the same like the S1 had.

You can use one of these boxes with the shorter ratios, or you swap the internals with any other IB5 ones you'd like more or you do a hydraulic clutch conversion.

When we talk about

Escort MK5a (91/92)
Escort MK5b (93/94)
Escort MK6 (95on)

Then you're gonna need a MK6 box. IB5 boxes were available from about 95/96 on.

I'm not sure if you can just fit the S2 diff with LSD into the box. But if this is a yes, the ratios of the 1.4 box combined with the S2 diff will give you nearly the same ratios like the standard S2 had. With slightly shorter first three gears.

.

I've just fitted an LSD S2 diff to an IB5 box, not 100% sure of what car it came from, but it's front starter, cable clutch, 3.82 final drive and the LSD fitted straight into the crown wheel. There is an ID tag still on the box that I can get tomorrow if needed.

Oh yer, and it has the S1 type front casing mounting point so will fit S1 or S2 Escorts.

can this be true?
some info

1.25/1.4 and 1.6 Zetec S Gear Ratios were found to be as following:

1st 3.58
2nd 1.93
3rd 1.28
4th 0.95
5th 0.76

The 1.7 Puma box however has a slightly taller 1st gear and a closer 3rd, 4th and 5th gear:

1st 3.15
2nd 1.93
3rd 1.41
4th 1.11
5th 0.88

The 1.6 Zetec S, has a 4.25 Final Drive Ratio

The 1.25/1.4, has a Final Drive Ratio of 4.27.

The 1.7 Puma has a Final Drive Ratio of 3.82

Escort RS turbo S1 ------------------- 3.15 1.91 1.27 0.95 0.76 4.27
Escort RS turbo S2* -------------------3.15 1.91 1.28 0.95 0.76 3.82

it s mean only the 1 st and second gear change is it a big difference?

It will if it's a Sport or Street Ka IB5, the casing is offset.

well I searched a little bit and I think I need to take the white plastic out and make a steel plate to cover it

and take the std S2 reverse sensor at put it where the big black imbus screw is on the left side where the braket comes

hy I put new beareing on the LSD one big one one small on and put the ib5 crown on it with the 8 bolts.

and im rebuild the ib5 now
i put the box together and do not let the selector shaft move around if it moves you could end up loosing reverse (my friend did this so i paid extra attention to reverse) i actually used mole grips on the little selecto stub sticking out the box to make sure it didnt move,
but I didn't put it on reverse gear with the linkage
is it normal that the gear I very dificcult to put in with the syncro they need to turn onces... noo
?

I just finished my ib5 gearbox put 2 new bearing on the rs2 LSD (only need to change one) the big one for the ib5
put the ib5 crown on it with the 8 bolts

made a 5th gear puller who worked very good

the LSD

rebuild it don't forget the 2 clips and the magnet
and put with the finger the little stick who action againste the rear gear and rebuilt the box staying in neutral...

new gasket but I rebuild the first gearboxcast with only the new gasket without using the green silicon (wich don t dry) tork the bolt at 20 Nm I hope there won t be NO leak ....grrrr

then I bought this green silicone put one it but only one the 2 last gasket

finish
