Default Fuel cut symptoms in fifth only?

I recently completed a head gasket change on my series 2 to cure my overheating problem. Initially all was well, but last night on the way to graft, she hit what felt like fuel cut in 3rd,4th & 5th.
I have a stage 1 chip, and boost increase to 17psi, with all supporting mods, she has been happily running till last night.

Gauge was spiking at 19, then holding 17.

I backed the boost off earlier, and now she is only doing it in fifth. Boost is only going to 15psi now.

Could there be a underlying problem elsewhere?

All hoses sensors are ok, plenty of fluids in etc. no leaks visible, checked all usual suspects with no joy?

Possible she is leaning out towards the top end, and protecting herself?
Could the coil be at fault,

Is it worth getting it set up yet again?

Fed Up

I would say get a set up to be sure. I have had that happen twice in the past... once it was the gaps on my spark plugs were too big (boost was blowing the spark out) and the other time i was getting valve bounce (tired valve springs).

Thanks for the reply s1cab.

I have a set of new NGK cosworth plugs I havent fitted yet. Should i use the standard gap, or is there another setting for modified engines?

i'd say it was more along the lines of the pump failing, you aren't using enough fuel in the lower gears so the supply will cope for a few seconds, but when you try to pump enough fuel for the longer duration it's not getting there and it's running lean instead

lowering the boost means you don't need as much fuel and so it's only doing it in 5th

easy to check before you get it remapped or set up again as it could just be the wiring at fault or a blocked filter

How would I go about checking the pump, filter, accumulator etc?

Sorted.

Found a kink in the fuel line where it comes up the firewall to the acumalator.

Also put the cossie plugs in, and she is motoring beautifully. Back to being stupidly rapid.
Going to check the timing on Monday, and hopefully all will be well so I can drive it a bit before it goes up for sale.
I might even used it for the 510 mile round trip to Classic Ford tomorrow.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Nice one

Good that you had an issue that was a simple fix rather than a 7 month rebuild lol

Get some rest if you are going to the pod tomorrow

Cheers mate,

Funny you should mention 7 month, as thats how long Ive had it, and how long its took to get her to where she is now. What started as a light winter fettle, turned into a pretty major recommission. Im busy making up my resto thread.
Ive sat on my arse all day watch Top Gear, so Im prepped for the Pod
One things for certain though, she has had me demented, but shes never been boring.
