Default Windscreen wiper issue.

Got caught in the rain yesterday and had to use my wipers for the first time in 10 months.

They were really slow then gradually got faster, but still not as quick as they should be. If i switch them off and back on again the cycle of them starting really slow repeats.

Does anyone know if the motor's are servicable or failing that, know anywhere I can get a new one/or one off another model etc..

Cheers.

Could be a bad earth on the motor ? or pull the plastic cover off and lube it up with some wd 40 etc ,may have seized up a bit

The earth looked a bit nasty so it got cleaned up but made no difference.

I shall try a bit of WD at the weekend.

I'd put a drop of oil on the wiper linkage too while your at it. If they have not been used for a while the chances are it's just lube required.

Well I decided as it was still light out to have a look. Cleaned up the contacts under the plug. gave all the mech a bit of a lube.
Its working fine on the first speed, if I switch it to the second speed it goes slower then the first speed. The motor seems to be struggling. If I lift the wipers off the windscreen it works as it should.

Was the screen dry when the wipers were on it?,may pay to unbolt the arms off the scuttle and run the motor for 5 mins just to free things up more

No I was drizzling it with a watering can.

Yeah I think I'll pull out the mech at the weekend and grease it all up. Then run it for a bit.

I shall report back

I had very similar issues with mine just before they stopped working altogether. They got to a point where the fuse just blew instantly, turned out to be a break in the wire going to the washer pump of all the things.

Took the motor to bits today.
It was quite hard to turn by hand.
Looks good inside. No burn marks, plenty of brush left. Slight blacking on the pick ups which cleaned up nicely.

However, putting it all back together there was a threaded bung that screws into the top of the motor. This was filthy with dirt etc. I screwed this is in then could not turn the motor by hand. The more I unwound the bung the easier the motor turned by hand.

Didn't get a chance to get it back on the car tonight so I'll see if this has made any difference.

Well it worked.

Wiper seems to be working faster then it ever has. Only trouble now is it won't stop where it supposed to.

It will run its course and sit back at the bottom of the windscreen on intermittent. But on normal or fast speed switching it off it'll stop about quater of the way up the windscreen.

Sound similar?

oh! haha. Mine still has its cycle. Just ends up at different parts of the windscreen when switched off of different speeds.

I'm thinking I may have the mech a spline or two out or something.

EDIT: Yup. moved the mech over a few splines and the resting point is nearly the same on all settings. I reckon it could do with moving another spline or two, however, not possible to see with it still bolted in the car.
