Nope, should just pull off (the studs can make this tough sometimes but it will slide eventually)

Do you have all the bolts removed? If I remember correctly I could not get mine off until I noticed the middle one

When you've taken all of the nuts off, use a chisel or a flat screwdriver (without a hammer!) to separate the plate from the head. You've got to use an adhesive sealant for the coolant opening in the middle of the cylinder head and this is sometimes hard to remove.

Thanks for all the replies guys.
Came off with a little gentle persuasion from the council screwdriver.
What sealant do I need for the coolant opening when I reassemble?. Will black Sikaflex do the trick?

Also whats best to use to clean block and head before new head gasket goes on?
Wet & Dry and WD40?

The right gasket and something like Universal blue by Hylomar. Apply on both sides.

Scratch the rest of the gasket off with a sharp blade, something like a box knife etc. Then use brake cleaner and dry paper.

Luckily the old gasket came off in one piece.

Use sealant on the gasket?
