Default s2 will not turn over when hot

Hi guys really having trouble with my s2, when cold it starts on the first turn of the key but after a long ish run if I stop it it will not even attempt to crank. I've changed the starter motor as my old unit ended up not even working when cold. Been out this evening and I've done about 45 miles, parked the car and tried to start it and the starter now just clicks! It will bump start fine I've heat wrapped the down pipe just wanted to know if this is a common issue and what you guys have done to stop this happening?

If you have changed the starter my money would be on the exciter wire.

After years of heat they can turn brittle and corrode/fall apart inside.

When I checked the small wire it had battery voltage when the key was on crank. I will trace the wire back tomorrow and let you know how I get on once I've replaced it

i had this exact same problem with my rst. i ended up wrapping the downpipe and the starter itself. also changed all the wires for new items. i think the starter was more heavy duty than the original and it cured it, iv also heard of ppl fitting starter motors from later zetec ford models, im sure if you do a search you will come across it.

Hi guys I fitted a new starter which was badged up for an escort but was much larger in size it winds the engine over brilliantly, to stop the heat issues I've heat wrapped the down pipe and fitted a turbo blanket. So far so good been on some good long runs with no issues.

Glad you fixed it, I have my starter wrapped in heat shield and the down pipe wrapped also, so far it has worked well. I also fitted a new ford started and alternator loom which replaced the original item that was in a shocking state!
