Default Clutch recommendations

Hi All,

Not been on this forum in years but have just bought an Escort Mk4 with Fiesta RS Turbo engine and running gear,

Unfortunately it would appear that the clutch is slipping like a lunatic on light boost so from the sounds of things needs replaced.

I plan on aiming for between 200 - 250 BHP in a few months with 195 BHP more realistic and imminent.

What clutch should I replace this with?

I should mention that I would like to use this car for road use so anything that would snap the muscles on my left leg are out the question lol!!

How much do the standard / fast road version of the Fiesta RS Turbo clutches hold power wise?

Car uses a T3 Turbo and is around 170 bhp the now

Thanks all

I would recommend AP. Which one you need depends on which power you are actually going to run.

I would avoid Helix. They do the job for much less, but they are noisy and very heavy.

I'd recommend helix no problem. Mine was fine when the car was on the road.

I run a alcon 6 paddle plate with a standard luk cover, holds the power pretty well and is nice and light. I have had the odd occasion of slippage.

As above, alcon 6 paddle seem to handle the power without giving the battered leg treatment

Agree with this.
CP2000-8 isn't too heavy and will hold around 230ftlb, the CP2000-35 is very heavy but will hold around 300ftlb.

Depends which one you used, the Helix equivalent of the AP CP2000-35 is truly horrible to use and incredibly heavy even when running a hydraulic clutch!

Sounds good to me folks. See when you did the conversion with the luk cover was it easy to do? Also are the fiesta and escort gearboxes the same minus the lsd? Is it worth sourcing an lsd box whilst I'm at it?

Its worth sourcing an IB5 gearbox while your at it. Esspecially if you're looking for 200+ bhp.

Have a search on here as there is plenty of info for this swap.

Surprised no one mentioned to stay away from techniclutch .. Luk clutches are worth a go, seem to be a good mix and match when using the pressure plate on uprated clutch discs.. I use the ap 4 paddle clutch for 200bhp plus.

Which clutch cover should i use with my mk4 with 1,8 Zetec Silvertop and IB5 gearbox? It should keep 400nm (300 lb ft) torque without problems, and if possible, it should be fitted in std Zetec flywheel with 220mm/215mm plate.

Last summer i had std rs turbo cover and 4 paddle plate, but it wasn't good enough, the cover wasn't stiff enough. Maximum torque in that setup were 350nm / 260 lb ft.

Has anyone used some other cars clutch cover with Zetec 220mm flywheel?

Is it enough? It's quite an expensice try, so my choice should definetly be good enough.

Web pages says only 310nm with organic plate, and that's much less than my 400nm. I'm not sure should i try it with that AP-racing organic plate or with my 4 paddle plate.

And does it fit to IB5? Original rs turbo clutch didn't fit, the main shaft guide bushing in gearbox was too thick to pierce the clutch cover.

I agree with Chopshop the sound of the Helix clutch is not that nice especially in 1st and reverse gear, other than that does the job and ain't that heavy.

They underrate their clutches by a large margin, there is of course no guarantee but I've ran one very close to 300ftlb without problems.
Yes it will fit an IB5, you must use the IB5 release bearing but I've not had one too thick for the clutch cover.

So went to remove the clutch to replace it and it was covered in oil and wasnt actually that badly worn, Gearbox main bearing seal had let go and covered the clutch in oil, Mixed with the fact that the Sump gasket was leaking.

Ended up putting a spare gearbox in there instead and fitted another standard clutch till i sort out the rest of the car

Moesin them marks on your flywheel are from heat, mine had similar when i removed my last cvh. Blackpool road and rally said it was heat spots or something like that.
