Default Brake upgrade - options?

I'm looking to upgrade the brakes on my XR3i, its running an RS Turbo engine, standard bottom end, small amount of headwork & cam, standard turbo and Webber management - approx 145bhp.

I'm not looking for any more power, quite happy as it is but it could do with bigger/better brakes. I'd like to change the rears for disks and calipers as opposed to drums so that rules out a standard RS turbo set-up. Also, i'd rather not have a Cosworth set-up as i have that on both my RST and Sierra so i'd like something different. The only problem with that is that i have a set of rear brackets for a cossie conversion spare - can i use these for a Mondeo set-up or RS2K?

I don't mind having a different set of fronts to rears (RST front and Mondeo rears or whatever), what would be the best set-up?

Bearing in mind i'm on a budget so some fancy Wilwoods etc are not an option. Open to all suggestions.

Cheers

if your running 17s..... go with an st170 up front and focus rears up back.....
saying that nothing wrong with running drums if your not tracking it

i run 6 pots on the front and a cossie setup up back and can still retail 15s and work rather well

Cheers for the replies - the car will be used mostly for track but I'm keeping it road-legal too.

Hadn't thought about the ST170 set up, will that fit under 15s? The ST150 and mk1 FRS are also good ideas, ill start looking for parts and see which is easier to come by and/or cheaper.

Will either of those make use of the brackets i have?

St150 and st170s are the same calipers just st170 has bigger discs.
st170 setup is the cheapest
st150s will bolt straight on and fit under 15 oem wheels
st170s need the hub holes opened up to 12mm iirc but only fit under 15 oems with some grinding.
Focus rs need brackets brake lines and the holes opened up in the hubs and need a min of 16 aftermarket wheels.

on the st170 setup you can just use mondeo mk3 calipers which cuts the cost in half but limits pad choice.

Don't fit rear discs unless your fit something much much better up front, the rear will lock up first (like pulling the handbrake) and this mostly ends badly!
ST170 (MK3 Mondeo) fit's under 15's with some grinding if you do go that way.

If you do decide to go rear disc conversion make sure you run an in-line bias valve for the rears only.

Shouldn't need one unless he runs the 280mm discs, easy upgrade on a focus non abs focus st170 front and std disc rear with no issues of rears locking up first until you replace the 250mm to 280mm then its a big problem.

This may sound stupid, if the st150 and st170 front calipers are the same what discs would you run on a series 2? I take it for the st170 to run the bigger disc it's just the hub mounting that's longer?
