Its just a method of building a zetec turbo, using the ST170 head would require management that can control the vvt.

Don't forget this thread is for building a zetec turbo in a escort, so it will differ to quite a extent to doing it to a focus.

I see so basically I could follow this guide get control of the vct
And then get a remap for the turbo just need to modify the exhaust down pipe to the system
An awesome thread any way

Hi karlos, great thread mate. Just got a few questions please if you don't mind. I've started gathering the parts together to do this conversion in my st170.

Would I be able to use my 6 speed box and shafts in my st170 if I uprate the clutch and flywheel? Or will they get chewed to bits?

Also I have been offered a t28 cheap off a mate. Would I be able to run this turbo safely?

Thanks chris

Yes mate the box will be fine with a suitable clutch for your torque, T28 would be ok, nothing massive but it will work.

Ok great, thanks karlos.

Which turbo would be best for bigger power but will be suitable to run with the st170 bottom end got now. Following your build thread but I'll hopefully be forging a zetec block late next year.

Thanks again

If you could get hold of something like a GT28RS, or even a stage 3 RST T3 would make for a punchy road car.

For anyone trying to get hold of the recommended head gasket for this build, my local Ford said they could get one in next day. I got mine from Ford Parts UK as it was cheaper.

How much did people pay for the gasket? Just had a quote from FP UK and it was nearly £135 with VAT?

Thickest cometic I ever found was 1.5mm thick from Burton power when the Ford one was on constant back order.

Looks like they improved their stock, as this would do

1.78mm

I'm happy with my Ford one for the sake of a few quid, but putting a link here if anyone else wants to use it

Default fiesta mk5

Hi I know this is a old thread but I'm thinking about putting this engine into my mk5 fiesta zetec s. I'm just wondering what would be required to make this possible ie every thing needed for engine, piping it all up, gearbox, drive shafts, turbo and intercooler along with oil feeds etc. All help appreciated thanks Karl

Default Sump question

I've just read this thread and I'm seriously looking in to doing this on my mk4 Rs turbo converted cabriolet. I've found and understand most of the info out there my only question that I'm not 100%on is the sump can the sump that comes in the st170 engine be made to work with the s2 Rs gearbox?

OK great news it's just the cost of the escort sumps to suit cost more than the engine lol.

As I'm going to be converting from mfi I need to look in to ecu options next.

Thanks for the reply

Read this thread through and through, and i love it. Good information on zetec turbo regardless of car its going in. Have been collecting bits for my focus turbo conversion for a while,

inc mk RS mani, heatshield, rsmk2 IC, forge BOV (plumback) etc etc,
scored R32 GTR turbo's but thinking they might be a bit small.

These are the specs of the GTR 32 Turbo's

Garrett T28 TE2701 turbine
RB26DETT Turbo
Identification number: 14411-05U20
T28
T3 Compressor Housing AR42
Wheel T3 Trim 50
Inducer = 42.51
Exducer = 60.1

Turbine
Housing AR 48
Wheel T25 Trim 62
Inducer 53.8mm
Exducer 41.7mm
Bearing = 273 Metal Journal bearing

Any one know:
A) will a escort T3 bolt up to a mk1 RS mani
b) where do i find a stage 3 one if they do?
C) are the specs of the gtr turbo's close to a stage 1 or stage 2 T3?

btw im from Australia so didnt get a chance to grow up with this stuff.

Pretty sure the focus rs mk1 log type exhaust manifold has a different flange to the T3

After mapping today with the Orion
I've now got a high spot in the bonnet where the new manifold must be pushing on the bonnet when on boost

The high spot hasn't broke the paint, so it'll tap down... I know PDR So it's easy sorted

But I need to sort the clearance out before sorting the bonnet

Anyone with a tubular manifold had to lower the engine and box in the bay?

Default Ka gearbox question

I've just got my hands ON bargain zetec so I'm now collecting the other parts to do this conversion next is the gearbox I like the idea of using the ka gearbox, I've seen one that's pretty close to me it looks to have the built in slave cylinder is this fine to use if I convert to hydraulic clutch pedal?
