bigger wheels are on the way as ive just bought my self a nice set of 4 pot brembos and 345mm discs can a cvh go about 7000rph as mine limits at 6,700rpm

Yes, that is theoretical, if that works my 328 theoretically does 190 odd

One or many of your con rods (are they standard) shits its self, your block in normally its sphincter lol

Load on con rods rises dramatically with engine rpm, more boost is actually less stressful to a conrod than more rpm.

Well the car does 90mph @ 3000 rpm (auto with converter lock out) so therefor it must do 180mph at 6000 rpm and 190 @ the 6400k rev limit?

Oh SHIT, i've just checked my book and it says it only does 145!!!! WHATS WRONG!

you see my point, theoretical top speed as determined by gearing is very different to what the car can actually do. Your car will not do 156 as it cannot pull 6,000 rpm or what not in 5th. So messing with bigger wheels and different gearing at the moment means nothing to you.

So, with the way this thread is going, it will be more a case of who hasn't done 170mph soon then?

I'll be interested to revisit this at the end of the next season and see how many of the wannabee's actually managed to achieve it.

My CVH made 7000rpm to do 171mph. Oli's made 7400rpm to do 173mph. Takes some mean feat to get a CVH to not only hold itself together at that engine speed, let alone actually produce useful power up there. Infact my previous spec had the limiter set at 7400rpm, but the torque fell off at 7000rpm. The later spec was still going at 7200rpm.

I think to do 170+mph, you'll need to be making hefty torque, like 280lb/ft at 7000rpm and have the right gearing, along with all the other links in place.

The will to want to do it isn't enough. Trust me.

AND in the distance.

Doing 170mph is one thing, doing it AND stopping at Brunters is quite another.

If I'd have been given 2.5 miles THREE or FOUR years ago, I'd have done 180mph then and more recently 185+mph, but the point of the top speed record is that its a measured distance too.

Look this car can do it too.

I think it will cost me under Ł100 to find a large enough cliff to win the rst top speed challenge.

Rob,
Or maybe drive it out of the back of a Hercules at 30,000 feet, you might hit 300mph.

lol got big hills in Spalding then?

Im only taking the piss mate, but seriously have a look through a few old posts by Christan and look at the effort he went to to get 170.

Then have a look through the performance form mag (i think its in pf not ff) at the achievements page, and look at the top speeds achieved by folks in there, i think 240-250 brake lets you touch your rev limit in 5th, but if your car does it then congrats it must be a fit little lump you have.

A 230bhp car with loads of tuning potential IF I can be bothered to do it, but for now I can drive it whenever I want, in great comfort (proper Leather Recaro's, proper Xenons, Climate control etc etc). They have a MUCH better chassis out of the box than the RST too.

I do miss my RST in some ways, but generally not and if someone came along tomorrow and offered me a swap for the most sorted proper RST ever built, I'd still say no for sure.

LOL, that was the one that did the spurious run. Only did that time ONCE that day and it really looked like a timing fault. Was alot of talk about it back then, can't remember the details, but certainly got discredited.

Rob,
like i said i have no actual proof and im not making any stupid claims that i have something like 400hp or anything like that? i have never done a top speed run at brunters but hopefully will be going this year when i get my car all built up again, i have only had the car a year and tbh i am still not 100% sure what has been done to it i know its on my last printout 208bho with 230ft lbs of torque, its running on an mfi m2 and it has yes get this ...... 8 injectors which nobody seems to believe until they see but also i dont know if it has any great effect on the performance, the previous owner had this done?????

i wouldnt really drive a 300bhp escort every day anyway, the reno is much newer and got more technology you cant really compare an 80s hot hatch with anything new, but you have done a good choice to go new skool

Top speed days always seem to have the same faces, but ever so often I've been and there have been a few new faces. Cars that are very little known and have all the promise of being great. I've seen cars arrive on trailers and I drive up in my little RST, with Beccy in the passenger seat and I really have thought many times 'this is it, this is the year I lose it'.

However, well, you all know the score. Only a handful of RST's have broken 160mph and only two with CVH engines have broken 170mph. Even including all those apparently serious cars that rocked up each year. Technology has come on, but not that much.

Most of these 'wannabees' manage circa 145-150mph at best.

Additionally, for those that are wanting a serious crack at the CVH RST top speed, I reckon you'll need to make AT LEAST 120mph terminal speed (more like 125mph) at Santa Pod to stand a chance. Looking forward to seeing your slips!!

You'll need to get invited by a mag to go to brunters unless you're thinking of hiring it out, and they don't seem to be bothering so much with rst thrashes and the like as often as they used to! I'm afraid i totally agree with chistian on this one lol, there's so few 1.6 rst's that have done any proven times and i've seen first hand cars with so called 300+ struggling to 150 let alone 160/170......have a look through the old daddy thrashes to see various cars with all the minerals on paper that are just slow, end of! I'm into trackdays rather than an unuseable topspeed car so know my car will never be good for it, but i'm sure it takes a LOT of r+d year on year to get the results, plenty of people could most likely do it of they bothered and had the time/money and inclination but not many ever achieve it all!

I think passion members should all contribute and hire brunters for the day, 100 cars and some 0-60/speed runs and a big bbq would be a good day
