Cvh sump Gasket
#5
i carefully applied sealant to the sump and block face, sandwiched the gasket in there and it seems ok at the moment- A lot better than it was trying it dry thats for sure!

I'm in the same boat as you mate. Engines just been rebuilt so first time out was fitted upside down as it were in perfect conditions. LEAKED.
I've now done it 4 times today on a ramp. Been on it all day! and used 4 Payen gaskets.
Thought I'd finally cracked it this afternoon but have just taken it out for a drive and she's weeping again!
If you work out the nack let me know! lol

What method are you going to opt for? I'm going to try sticking gasket to block first then offering sump up as my next attempt.
What are people views on torqing bolts? I've tried 5nm and 8nm and nipping up by hand without torque wrench.
Nipping by hand has had best effect (last attempt) and as is. Best effort so far with only a few drips. Glued gasket lightly to sump on this last attempt using superglue.

Took me 6 times to get right! Admittedly i could have lived with the 4th and 5th attempt but it would have bugged me that there was the tiniest of weeps from the g/box end
It really is the worst job on a CVH

I glued the gasket to the sump and put a thin layer of sealan at either end of the sump (the half moons). I then left this for 30 mins so it was nigh on dry but had a bit of movement in it. Then tightened the bolts finger tight (went around them a few times each) followed by a quick tweak with a socket
Lasted 6 months so far. Will probably start leaking as of tomorow now i've said that

Just been out for a 40 mile running in blat and is now sat in the garage dripping on the floor, looks to be coming from oil pump end and front and rear
Think i'll come back to it in a few days or book it in and make it someone elses problem but don't really want to be beaten by this!!

They usually fail because of too much crankcase pressure. It's vital to cure that first.
About the fitting of the gasket; a sump that has been overthightened once in its lifetime is going to give trouble. It first requires some careful reshaping or just a new sump.

I have recently done mine, mine kept leaking from cambelt end, turned out that it was the crank oil seal. Looks exactly like sump gasket failure.
When doing the sump gasket make sure you get the gearbox ends on properly, fit the sump then look up through the bolt holes so that you can see its aligned and the gasket hasnt been pushed in to the sump.
I do mine by super glueing the gasket to the sump. Bit of sealant on the half moon sections.
A right pain but it is do-able.
Oh yeah and i recommend the FORD GASKET
this is a pretty good guide

anyone got any suggestions as to re-tapping 4 of the bolts ? 1 next to the flywheel at the back, 1 next to the crank pulley the other end same side and two on the front by the startermotor Gonna have to do it insitu too which is going to be a total fucking nightmare

Hi all.
I just got a rubber rocker cover gaskit and a mate told to to use the cork one, as it settles better, as i also have a sump to fit to this engine, is the cork one better for the sump than a rubber one?

Series 1 had the 4 piece sump gasket set, 2 strips of cork and orange rubber half moons. Series 2 had the one piece rubber gasket. Regarding the rockercover gasket it should be a cork one but it has been known for people to use the 1.8 CVH Sierra one which is rubber and more sustainable to oil etc

i think i must of got lucky i did mine first time, i sprayed the sump with brake cleaner and gunk to clean it, and use a little bit of flange sealent to stick the gasket to the sump and used the old bolts to line the holes up, left it for half an hour then put it on, did it hand tight using new bolt with locktite on em then gave em all a quick 90 degree turn, and aint had no leaks
