That's how I did my Orion some years ago. The S2 gearbox even has the alternate cable location readily drilled.

Only probs I can think of with this idea is that you'll have a really really heavy clutch because firstly the AP clutches have uprated pressure plates and are much heavier than a stock clutch, and secondly your going to have less leverage by shortening the arm therby increasing the amount of force needed at the pedal, this also puts a lot more strain on the cable and quadrant. This is also assuming that there is enough self ajustment at the quadrant to take up the slack created by the arm being closer to the cable, if not your in the same situation as if you'd done nothing but just with a heavier clutch!

JesseT, Did yours disengage properly, and what clutch where you using?

I agree with you on that. This will have to be tested and could be a problem!

I don't agree. Of course you will need more force to disengage the clutch in comparisation to a complete standard setup. But when you fit a quadrant with larger diameter you're doing exactly the same. This also will increase the travel on the release bearing and therefore it takes more force to disengage the clutch. And yet this will stay in very acceptable limits because we all agree on installing a larger diameter quadrant......

Think again about a bicycle. When changing to a larger diameter gear on the front (in our Escort the quadrant) you will need more force but go faster. When changing to a smaller diameter gear at the rear (in our Escort the release arm) exactly the same will happen. So if I calculate how much shorter the release arm should be to gain the same travel as with the larger diameter quadrant then all should be fine. The clutch will release okay and the pedal won't be to "hard"!

The calculation could be made with the simple formula which we all learned at school:
D1 x n1 = D2 x n2

Right finally, we have some quadrants machined up and ready to buy if any of you are interested.
They are £40 each including postage in the UK, the bushes for the first few will be alloybronze, because the delivery for the Iglidur self lubing bushes are months away.

You can contact my mate who makes them, directly by email extremesportsproducts@hotmail.com or buy it now from webpage www.extremesportsproducts.com which will be active by the end of day (13/04/08)

Wow great!

If they are produced at this point then I would like one instead of trying out my idea.
What is postage to The Netherlands going to cost?

I'll be looking out for it on the mentioned website!

Karlos, I just made it equally short than a mk3 escort would have it as standard. I just had to do the mod because I had a hybrid gearbox with mk3 right half and mk4 left half. Sure the strain and force needed is more, but only some 15% or so. Can't really feel the difference.

I've fitted it last tuesday and drove the car on wednesday. Finally I can cruise around with confidence.....

Big up for Nigel B for making these quadrants. He saved the day!!!

For R6Franky, it's not easy to take pictures when fitted because it's a horrible place to get a camera in. Just crawl under your dash and have a good look. It's not hard, just a pain to do because of the tight space your working in. But you should be okay....

im still waiting for one quote to come through from a guy in wales, hes taking a fair amount of time too so im not holding my breath on that one to be honest.

one company near to me has been great about it all though and he got back to me within a day of seeing him, back in a previous post i mentioned a company i visited that did alot of work for rolls royce, over heads are pretty high so if i was to go through them it was going to be expensive but they did recommend this guy in question as they use him alot themselves so on theyre recommendation im gathering he must be good, if its good enough for rolls royce, its good enough for me.

ok down to the important thing, PRICE, based on making a batch of 20 quadrants hes given me a price which is £10 lower than the company that recommended him. he can do them for me at £40 each, i know a few of you may think this is high but you really have to take into account that this is a permanant solution to an increasing problem for alot of people. fitting one of these will be the last time youll have to go through one breaking and the last time youll be working on ya back in a tight space and just the overall inconvenience of having one break.

so an all in price including me packaging them up and posting them out via royal mail special delivery should be around £45 - £46 each depending on the weight of them. what i need now is a definate yes from people who would like one of them, if i get a good amount of interest over the weekend ill give him the go ahead on monday but id obviously need some sort of deposit or even payment up front because i dont really fancy paying for these up front and then trying to recoup the money as theyre going to cost £800 for the batch of 20 !!!!!. he reckons on a 2 week turn around once the go ahead is given.

sticking to the rules ill create a link to this thread in the for sale section.

below ive attached 2 pics of the quadrant i bought and used to get the quotes, itll be basically the same including a bronze oilite bush inserted in the pivot hole like in the pictures which ive not seen in other peoples examples, the main differance will be two small holes drilled into it which is really only to help them to clamp them down during machining, of course itll also lighten them up a bit too. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE ONE IN THE PICTURES IS A WELL USED EXAMPLE, YOURS WILL BE NEW.

cheers for everyones patients , just hope the effort ive put in is worth it now.

regards

dave.

How much does it cost me to buy one and ship it to me in Malta please?
