im also maybe in the process of getting a batch made, ive got 10+ precision engineers in my town and also a couple out of town that im getting prices from, this obviously takes a bit of time coz i have to visit each one, who then in turn have to give me approx quotes after taking measurements etc. im not doing this to make a profit, i just thought as ive managed to get an alloy quadrant myself id try getting some made before i fit it to my car to help you guys out, if for some reason, the ones available from dave_y dont come off. let me know if your interested guys but obviously only if daves ones dont turn up as hes got first dibs on orders. i can supply pics of the one i managed to get which is going to be used to make the others so youll get a pretty good idea of what theyll look like etc, obviously theyll be better condition as theyll be unused, unlike mine which came out of a car that was being broken.

cheers

dave.

hi dave, well maybe together, if you try other places aswell, we might get a bit of success. thing is i dont think itll be cheap to get them made as the few companies i have seen so far have said its def a cnc thing. the £20 approx you was going to be supplying them for was a fantastic price i think and im hoping i can find someone to get near that price but i know if i was still in the market for one, quality would be my main concern before cost as long as its a fairly realistic price of course.

ok peeps thats one question i put to you, what would you be willing to pay for one, obviously take into account what it costs if you break a normal modded one and replace it a few times, then theres the inconvenience of having your car either stranded then off the road while you get one then mod it and then piss around fitting the thing, atleast this is literally a one off buy that will mean it never breaking, as stated previously, im not doing this to make any money, you get em for what i end up being quoted. ive been there a few times myself and im currently in the situation where my car is off the road due to quadrant failure. the one i bought cost me alot of money and it was second hand.

cheers guys

dave.

not yet mate, im trying as many companies as poss, that way ill have a better chance to find someone to make them at a price people will be willing to pay, ive only heard back from one company so far and they gave a approx price of £45 each, theyve got big overheads though, understandable as they make things for rolls royce jet engines etc, so he was honest from the start when he said they wouldnt be the cheapest lol but i wanted a quote anyway. theyd be made with an insert where it mounts to the pivot rod, otherwise over time itll wear the hole bigger, ive not seen this on other peoples quadrants, only mine im using to get quotes. im on the case mate and as soon as i know ill post it up !!!!.

cheers

My dad has been in the airplane engine game since 1969,so Im well used to seeing aircraft bolts/nuts/washers/fixings etc, lovely quality stuff. Some have even found their way onto my trackcar!! Keep me updated!! Regards,Micky

I work for Rolls Royce.. 10years now

I know of a few places locally where I could get these made but I don't have one to use as a template. If someone could draw one up with the correct measurements I'll get on the case asap. Doesn't have to be pretty, just have the correct sizes on so others can see what I'm getting made.

I was guna say you could probably prolong the lift of it by taking a bit of time over the install.

I seriously believe its the way the quadrants are cut that causes these issues, it should be possible to make them reliable

ok everyone, sorry i havent posted a reply sooner, been relying on engineers getting back to me with quotes.

im still waiting for one quote to come through from a guy in wales, hes taking a fair amount of time too so im not holding my breath on that one to be honest.

one company near to me has been great about it all though and he got back to me within a day of seeing him, back in a previous post i mentioned a company i visited that did alot of work for rolls royce, over heads are pretty high so if i was to go through them it was going to be expensive but they did recommend this guy in question as they use him alot themselves so on theyre recommendation im gathering he must be good, if its good enough for rolls royce, its good enough for me.

ok down to the important thing, PRICE, based on making a batch of 20 quadrants hes given me a price which is £10 lower than the company that recommended him. he can do them for me at £40 each, i know a few of you may think this is high but you really have to take into account that this is a permanant solution to an increasing problem for alot of people. fitting one of these will be the last time youll have to go through one breaking and the last time youll be working on ya back in a tight space and just the overall inconvenience of having one break.

so an all in price including me packaging them up and posting them out via royal mail special delivery should be around £45 - £46 each depending on the weight of them. what i need now is a definate yes from people who would like one of them, if i get a good amount of interest over the weekend ill give him the go ahead on monday but id obviously need some sort of deposit or even payment up front because i dont really fancy paying for these up front and then trying to recoup the money as theyre going to cost £800 for the batch of 20 !!!!!. he reckons on a 2 week turn around once the go ahead is given.

sticking to the rules ill create a link to this thread in the for sale section.

below ive attached 2 pics of the quadrant i bought and used to get the quotes, itll be basically the same including a bronze oilite bush inserted in the pivot hole like in the pictures which ive not seen in other peoples examples, the main differance will be two small holes drilled into it which is really only to help them to clamp them down during machining, of course itll also lighten them up a bit too. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE ONE IN THE PICTURES IS A WELL USED EXAMPLE, YOURS WILL BE NEW.

cheers for everyones patients , just hope the effort ive put in is worth it now.

regards

dave.

Sorry to piss on your chips, but unless i am mistaken that is a standard sized Mk4 quadrant which isn't going to be any good for the boys running AP clutches who fit the 58mm white quadrant (the reason they break in the first place)..............

bloody hell, £40 for that, as a engineer i know how easy that is to make, i was expecting one with teeth for that price.

might have to look into make some up my self when i get my workshop wired up

you crack on mate, im not making them myself so if your making them them itll obviously be cheaper.

when taking into account the cost of materials including the inserts then the time to set up the cnc machine then the time itll take to machine all of them it takes many hours, then the dreaded vat on top it all mounts up.

if nobody is interested then thats fine by me, i admit it needs someone with an interest in the quadrant personally to make them because theyde then do it at virtual cost price but companies arent that generous im afraid. sometimes i wonder if it was worth me bothering to help people coz its meant my car being off the road for 6 wks now while ive been visiting numerous companies and waiting for quotes .

dont get me wrong mate, im setting up my own engineering business at the mo so i know the costs, and tbh if a company like demon tweeks done them you could double that £40 price tag at least, if not they would charge £100 each.

matrial to make them wouldnt cost as much as you think, and the bush thats pressed in is prob just tubeds brass or bronze and bored/reemed to size.

theres many ways of making them, but i was a bit shocked to find they wasnt toothed, but then again, the set up, program and tools to teeth them would make them more exepnsive plus alloy wouldnt last long as it would wear like plastic, you would need a case hardened steel one for it to last forever.

i guess £40 is worth the cost for the fact once its in its in, and the cost and time to keep replacing plastic ones.......

honestly mate if you was to see the one in the picture which i bought and used to get quotes youll see its a chucky bit of kit, its 20mm wide approx. the only wear on it is from where the initial adjustment was made to the clutch from the bolt being turned and it making contact with the quadrant and thats only cos it didnt have the nut on the end of the bolt, once adjusted itll prob outlast the clutch to be honest as theres no way it could wear anywhere else, i think thats why it was fitted with the bronze oilite in the first place ????.

the cutter used to make the groove for the cable, everywhere ive been, seems to be a tool not often used anymore as most of the companies have said they have to buy it which has also meant it increasing the cost as they add that into the overall quote. i think the prob lies in the groove changing depth when it reaches the fork so it keeps the same radius all the way round, the only reason i can see for this to be made this way is to have more material on the fork area as this could prob mean a weak area if it was only thin ????, thats why if you look the outside radius squares off towards the fork too.

na mate when i said it would wear i ment the teeth, if it had teeth and was mad from alloy they would wear out.

thers a few ways you could make that anyway, as i dont have a CNC machine in my workshop i would have to do it manualy, i would either do it in 2 parts or the one part using a rotary table to cut the groove.

to gain the shape, i would prob run a sheet of alloy down to a company local to me and have the shapes water knifed out, depending on cost.

dont get me wrong mate, for what it is and the time and hassle it will save £40 isnt so bad, and if it does what its ment too, worth the money

oh right i get ya now mate, thing is it seems like its a growing problem for people or atleast when a thread pops up more people come out the wood work saying they have the same problem, this is what makes me wonder why its not a thing which has been made for off the shelf sales as i think if it was available every person who was undertaking the mk5 mod would opt to buy the ally quadrant straight away.......also makes me think why when a solution comes available people dont seem to be interested, atleast not at the moment anyway lol.

thanks again for ya input mate

It's a disgrace that AP don't include a suitable quadrant with their uprated RST clutch kits
How much would it take for a company of their size to commision/produce an ally quadrant to supply with the clutch kits???

Sure anyone buying an AP clutch wouldn't mind paying an extra £20-£30 (barely 10%ish extra on price of clutch kit) ??

As it stands, their selling a product (& not a cheap one at that) which due to the growing number of quadrants failing, is seriously flawed & unable to reliably carry out the single function it's designed to do

Rant over
Oh, anyone know the Finis code of the correct quad & pedal needed for the Mk5 conversion?? Just fitted CP 20008 kit, & hoped to get away with the standard pedal set up, but it's not strong enough to engage clutch.
So urgently need Mk5 quadrant, so friend of mine can make me an ally one .

Cheers

good idea bud, its not looking good at the moment for genuine interest to be honest, after all the hard work and sacrificing fixing my car it looks like it may of been in vain. probably didnt help with cetain people questioning whether its even the right one, some people could of been turned off by it.

i wasnt making any money from it, i was only trying to help fellow forum users as i was lucky to find one to fit to my car and when mine went it cost me a clutch and gear box so i got the worst outcome.

im fitting mine tomorrow though so itll atleast be happy driving for me from now on.

cheers bud
