Default Gearbox upgrade

Hello, I am going to upgrade the gearbox and diffs on my escos soon, the engine is 500bhp spec and would like some information on what is the best set up for a road car? also I would like to change to hydraulic clutch set up, is there a kit I can buy or do I have to buy bits separately?
Many thanks
Phil

My car will be over 500bhp and has:

Bara straight cut box
2wd cosworth gripper diff
Ford motorsport thick wall

I've not used it in anger yet as it hasn't been run in but I'm hoping it will last

I am going opplinger long box close ration (on good advice) and I have just assembled the mk supra diff kit on my newly rebuilt bara 3.9 supra diff......new bearings, seals bolts, paint and reset the LSD. I will do a thick wall front diff but bara is getting 10 of the cr diffs like Wenny runs but the cost is around 3k for these and don't think i will need it.

As for the hydraulic clutch I think Reyland sell them in 2 kits depending on centre push or arm iirc

Supra diff IMO, mk conversion kit and bara rebuild...fit and forget. The biggest problem is finding a 3.9 non turbo supra diff. I would eitherbuse bara to build up the box or romain at opplinger who can supply built up boxes anyway. I am probably getting the whole box shift, one supplier and one warranty.

If opplinger can supply the whole gearbox without me having to send one out to italy then that is what I will do. on the lookout for a supra diff now.
Thanks caddyshack for your replies.

I really can't see why someone was so dull to match the coversion up to the supra mounts! Lexus is200 sport/is300 and supra use the same diffs just is300 are miles easyer to come by and cheaper but irrc the mounts are alittle different to the supra but you can just rehouse the lexus gears into the supra housing.

Just thinking some of the older lexus cars do use the very same hosuing as the supra so mite be easyer trying to find one of them.

Theres plenty out there http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_tr...at=0&_from=R40

But if this did happen I wonder how long it will take a idiot to tell a breaker what there up to and like the supra force the price up supra diffs were Ł50 to Ł100 before the likes of chochyn started phoning all the breakers and letting them know rocket scientists lol

The opplinger box is longer using a spacer for more room for bigger gears and added strength, the bara box using a gear kit is a little cheaper but it is semi helical so more noisey.

You need to make sure that on the supra diff you find a 3.9 ratio to match the 4x4 system front diff therefore not just any supra diff...you actually need a non turbo LSD 3.9 ration from around 1992. Therefore if you can suggest which Lexus to match that would be useful. Bara revuolt mine with new seals and bearings plus reset the diff LSD then repainted, it cost about Ł700 on top of buying a diff and then around Ł500 for the mk kit so it is around 1500 but they are bullet proof and can easily take 600-700 bhp with abusive driving.

so i can give my gearbox to bara with Ł700 and it will not break with 380-420 hp max?

i dont see me going for 500 anytime soon but Ł700 sounds cheap...

No, it was 700 to rebuild the DIFF, you are looking at around Ł2500 I think for a bara big tooth or fix it kit and nearer Ł3200 for oppliger inc all taxes and shipping and short shift kit. You need to consider a new clutch at the same time (uprated is about 250iirc) and a lightened flywheel is around 600. You also neede to consider if you want to do hydraulic conversion whilst it is all apart...thats another 600 from reyland (they do the clutches And flywheels too)

The long box I am going for (if opplinger ever replies) is close ratio as the Cossie box has very long gearing, the. Close ratio may top out around 140mph but the acceleration will be better with the better suited gearing and it helps to stay on boost.

Bara are the dealer now for opplinger and the gear kit is cheaper than bara's.
Once I get the money together I am going to go opplinger gear kit, quaife updated front diff casing with LSD and gripper rear diff.

It's Oppliger guys, not Opplinger

I'm going for the same box.

Oppliger is now sorting my spec out for 530+ bhp with their box.

Just not sure about the turbo so could be more..

And also doubting about lightend flywheel.

I did write oppliger in my posts but most do call him opplinger. Why do you doubt the lightened flywheel. Borg Warner efr twin scroll is the turbo to go for on a good manifold.

It is also important to decide on standard or close ratio, remember that the Cossie is very long geared in standard form and this can make even highly tuned ones feel laggy as they seem to drop out of the sweet spot, the close ratio still gives around 150 mph top speed which is more than enough for most use. I spoke, to Mark about the close ratio that he tried and he said it was awesome....

Spoke to Bara today and I have to say he seems a top bloke, keeps a lot of stock and looks to supply ASAP, he did my supra diff in next to no time.

I have decided to go for the supra diff with 3.9 closer ratio then the 3.6 standard ratio. I don't know wich Mark tested?

I too have a 3.9 supra diff. Mark explained this would give SHORTER gearing but not CLOSER, it is the closeness of ratios that does the magic as I understand it.

It is the low drop in rev diffence between the gears that keeps it on the boil and not dropping out of the power band. I guess if you can keep it in the 4000 to 7500 rev band the whole time then you are on to a winner?

I think the shift is shorter too if you use the oppliger cradle to suit the close ratio.

Clearly there is a reason why romain oppliger sells both normal and close?
