Gearbox Help (MT75 4X4)
I'm trying to take apart my gearbox to do bearings and seals and whatever else it might need. I've got most of it apart, but I am stuck on the 36 mm nut on the output shaft. I've tried heating it a bit, and banged on it with an impact gun and the super deep socket for a while and have had no luck getting it to come loose. Is there something I'm missing? Any suggestions? I'm at the point that I think I need to take a pencil grinder to it to weaken the nut. Is this a common problem? Thanks for the help.

I'm pretty sure that the retainer is on the input side of the gearbox, I managed to get that loose fairly easily, my problem is on the mainshaft output side. I'm having trouble with the 36 mm nut on the output, are you referring to the 46 mm on the input side? Either way I'll go have another look to see if I missed something. Thanks.

Sorry, my mistake,
You mean the part that connects to the propshaft dohnut showm here
They are thread locked on and mine took me fooking ages to get off with an impact gun, if you can use a long pry bar to hold it via the studs and use a heavy duty breaker bar that should work with a bit of weight on it mate

I made a deep 36 m socket for the output shaft and then had a friend help me make up a 1 3/4" nut with the clutch spline pattern in the middle. I put the gearbox in gear, hold the input shaft with the splined nut and then use the impact on the 36mm with the impact. No luck, no retainers or anything else I can see. I think I will try weakening the nut with a pencil grinder on Wed. or Thurs. night and see what happens. I sure hope those nuts are still available. Anyone know where to get one or two in case this happens again?

I had a look through the gearbox rebuild guide i have for the mt75 and it says to do exactly what you are doing! special tool to hold the splined input shaft and long reach socket on the nut and undo? when i pulled apart an old mt75 4x4 box i done what you are but used a breaker bar on that 1 i think but you have to properly support the socket with wood or something to save damaging the shaft

Nut is finally off. I took the gearbox to my friend's shop. tried with the impact and got nowhere. He looked at the amount of play between the input and output shafts and thought there was too much for the impact to be effective. That made sense to me, what he did next I would have never have thought of. He placed the nut with the spline in it in his milling machine in the vice. We put the trans, bellhousing down in the mill and put a Tbar on the socket. Then he put 2' extensions on each end of the tbar, climbed into the mill and I pulled and he pushed. After a couple of really hard grunts it broke free. The milling machine was the extra mass we needed to stabilize the input shaft and finally get some force on the output shaft. Hope this helps someone else in he future. That was one tight nut!
