if its there with the clutch realeased then its more than likely the gearbox as the input sharft will be spinning with the engine so the noise is comeing from a bearing inside the gearbox

Input shaft bearing, mines exactly the same.

Take gearbox out and the main input shaft will rattle about slightly.

When you press the clutch in, it keeps it tight, therefore does'nt rattle.

Everyone says it's the release bearing, only if your very lucky!

Have heard of the chain in the transfer box making a noise aswell if its stretched, but couldnt say if this goes away with the clutch being dipped.

Input shaft bearing is Ł22, I fail to see how you would need a second hand gearbox

You'll be buying some else's problems.

If you get a decent company to do it, I was qouted Ł200 to strip all the internals out and replace ALL bearings and oil seals.

Try G R S Gearbox specialists, there based in Newburn/Newcastle or there's Keldine near the Metrocentre, bit more expensive though.
