Default Fuel tank imploded !

Call from my mate last night, who also has an Escort cossie. He wanted to know how to get fuel back into the fuel rail. I asked him what had happened and the story goes as follows.....

Car completely cut out on his way home. He undid the fuel cap to some big hissing, followed by a large bang from underneath the rear. He looked underneath and the fuel tank was out of shape. From what he told me, the fuel cap wasn't 'breathing' and whilst the car drank the fuel, the tank imploded. Releasing the cap allowed it to pop back to approximately 80% of it's shape (i presume there isn't a breather on the tank apart from the cap????)

Here's the catch if someone could help, his car won't start although fuel is getting to the fuel filter (he undid both unions and when cranked, the fuel did piss out under pressure). Any ideas ? Could there be an airlock in the fuel rail etc?

Cheers for any advice

Chris

With electronic injection:
turn the ignition onto the final position ( II ) several times in quick succession, half a dozen times say, this will prime the fuel line and force fuel through, turn the engine over. Continue this a couple of times untill engine fires up, it will work if thats all it was, being out of fuel.
Weird about the tank though, never heard of that before

This happened on my old 16v Astra GTE,went threw a flood and it filled the
carbon canister which the tank vents threw with water.
Would have thought there is a breather system of some sort on Esc Cos because cars fitted with cats are'nt allowed to breath fumes from the fuel tank to atmosphere.
Must have a blockage somewhere he'll need to find when he gets it running

Spoken to my mate today, JC found that the fuel pump had sheared. Presumably where the imploded tank had 'crushed' it. At least he knows that the problem is now, so all go out and check your tanks are breathing properly LOL Thanks for the help you lot
