Default Escort Identity

has anyone ever heard of an Escort Cosworth which has a VIN number Starting SABTVR..... my friend bought one against my advice. it also has monte carlo seats in a large turbo shell (fuel filler cap that is taken out with the key, no flap). the other plate beside the vin number says it should be a motorsport, but the car has a sunroof + all electrics. this other plate also says LHD. is this car a fake? i think so, but the owner disagrees.

Could this motor be a re-shell and have a new number issued by the dvla?

Sounds a bit dodgy to me too, never seen an Escos with that starting prefix before, do the VIN numbers match on the slam panel and under the flap at the drivers door?

"Kit-Car" Built from either a motorsport shell or a "Trimmed" shell. All factory cars start - WFOF*************. A very thorough check needs to be done if buying a car such as this- thats not to say this particular one is dubious however, this has clearly been built from parts and you should verify origin and check receipts. On a final note this type of car will never be worth anything like the value of a genuine car. Hope this helps

I personally think the car has been reshelled. the interior has deffo been apart, and i mean every screw has been out at some stage. I told him not to buy it, when he said it was a motorsport with a small turbo + electrics + sunroof, but he didn't listen. The car came from a dealers and trading standards have told him that the dealer must take the car back if its not real. He is currently waiting for a report from the DVLA to verify the cars identity. Thanks for all the help guys.

PS it was me that made the origional post, just did it under my friends log in by mistake

I've got one of these exactly the same (although it hasn't got the Monte trim and mine's got the fuel flap). As someone earlier said, what it is is a brand new motorsport shell that has been used to shell another car or build up a car from parts and the shell has been issued with a number by DVLA (as it wouldn't have had one being a new shell) and this will have been stamped in. It will start SABT because they won't be issuing the WF prefix numbers on shells now.

Hope that helps.

Hi Guys I know this is an old thread but I have just posted this exact question in above section.

I also have a car with a vin starting with those letters but has a U instead of a V. it is a UK Motorsport shell and is apparantly an ex malcolm Wilson rally car in full rally spec.

I live in South Africa and the car has been here since the late 1990's as it was registered in SA in 1998. very strange VIN...: SABTUR03413293394

Anyone come up with answers yet on the cars above?

The motor now has a 200block and is groupA spec with 8 injectors etc etc, the T35 turbo is now fitted to my Sapph Cossie

Here are some pics of the plates, I am trying to get some background on this car and I am waiting for a reply from Malcolm Wilson M-Sport

Cheers

Gavin

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is the manufacturer's own ID, found stamped onto a plate under the bonnet, under the carpet by the driver's seat and/or etched on to the windows.
Vehicles which are approved for sale in the EU have 17 digit VINs. Imports from outside Europe, such as Japan, may have short VINs. If you see a VIN which starts with the letters SABTVRO, take special care, because this VIN is assigned by a Vehicle Registration Office (VRO) when the original identity of a bodyshell or frame cannot be determined.

This is so annoying, as you state "the original identity of a bodyshell or frame cannot be determined" but yet it still states on the log book, Escort Cosworth,

years ago ginge the bizzies did allsorts,i had them stamped by the mcr and liverpool stolen vehicle squad, the cars were even hpi clear too.
the bizzies would stamp them due to if the car was stopped and inspected again by another force the police knew the car had been subject of theft etc and sorted out and the new chassis stamp number could be checked up on and everything including the investigating officers and paperwork could be found.
