Thumbs down How to recognize a replica escort Cosworth?

Hi

A few months ago i bought an Escort RS Cosworth. Now I'm getting paranoid thinking about that it can be a fake . From the chase number i found that it was made in Germany and it was build in May 1995.

Two things made me paranoid A) It doesn't have a sun roof. B) I bought it for very few money something around € 3000.

Apart from does facts it has a cosworth engine and 4x4 gearbox.

Can any one help maybe telling me what things should i check in order to know if it's a replica?

Thanks

its prob a motor sport shell mate they were non sunroof

also some form of hpi check or the log book should show what the car was or is fwd 4x4 etc

also check for welding that doesn't look factory paint there is loads of stuff to tell if its not a shell ie one thats been mate from 4x4 floor pan and fwd shell

in this country cars built from motor sport shells have to go on a Q plate which are assigned by the dvla

if you put some pics we'll probably be able to spot if its a replica mate,

if it hasnt got sunroof it could've been built from a motorsport shell, does it have rear
pop out windows??

3k is very very cheap though for an escos, the engine would probably be worth more
than that.

Sounds dodgey to me. May not be fake, but could be stolen!!! Do a proper HPI check on it.

it's got the engine you should be able to tell whether its four wheel drive, but for 3000 euros i wouldn't be complaining, what's that 2.5 grand? sounds like a bargain to me.

Yes it does have pop out windows, and the interior is identical to many escort pictured in this forum. Lets say it was "built from a motorsport shell" would that mean it's based on a sierra chase?

For now this is the only pic i have which is not really helpful tomorrow i will take same more and post them.

As regrading the price we thought it was so cheap because 2nd and 4th gear are damaged, and the body wasn't perfect.

Nothing wrong with it being a Motorsport shell, it was just built by Ford so that people could buy a cheaper version of the normal road car & go Rallying. Get the VIN number checked by Ford, they should be able to tell you what it started life as.

If that is the case it would account for why some bits will be similar to the normal road car & others have been swapped, these cars are getting on now, very few will be standard nowadays.

Aye but its also a non standard colour so you would presume the wing grills would have been removed when it was painted, or its been built up from a shell and non standard odds and ends used in the build, either way we need more pics sounds interesting!

A "standard"-version EsCos doesn't have a sunroof either. Our red one has no sunroof, no pop-out rear windows, but it does have Recaro's.
Like some of the guys already said: try to put up some more pictures

mate thats all the escort is anyway a saff with botox

and arnt they monte wheels?

from first impressions you got ur self a very good bargin standard cossie or as said a motorsport shell (even better as its seam welded).

colour points to a motorsport.

I dont think there is a worry that its a replica. why go to all that arse ache to weld a 4x4 pan to a normal escort shell and mess around with wings, then sell for 3000 euros. it dont ass up. so think ur ok there.

One thing which does strike me tho as the colour is different, is it could be a ringer, or cat 3 insurance job. still a cossie but maby with a bad history!!.

As said get some more pics, and check out the vin and engine numbers.
maby have a poke around and hope not to find any repair work!

fingers crossed youve just had the buy of the century and not a stolen or insurance bodge

I will definitely post some photos later today, if you need any specific ones just tell me.

1) It does have recaro seats and as i said before the interior is identical to the escorts cosworth non leather interior.
2)I think it was repainted to that light green color (it may have been royal blur before but I'm not sure about it)
3) Yes the wheels are from OZ Racing so they are the ones fitted on the Monet Carlo Version
4) I bought the car from Sicily Italy, so it's LHD but that shouldn't matter

That it shows up as built in Germany is correct, they were built by Karmann rather than Ford. Cossies are cheap in Italy, presumably more so with a knackered gearbox but if i were you I'd perhaps want to know more about whether it was stolen at some point.

That is only true if they have been built using second hand parts. Providing you can supply documentary evidence that the car was built using almost totally new parts (there is a list of what items have to be new etc) it can be registered like a new car - this is how there was that X-reg one a while back.

As requested here are some photos of the Cosworth. I removed the side skirts for cleaning, since they were full of mud.

its deffo a genuine Escort Cosworth but whether it was factory built or built up is questionable. The colour is 110% not a factory colour thou.
Pm me the full chassis number and I'll research it and see what I can find

Thanks for the pm.
As long as that's definilty the cars chassis number its very good news! it a genuine factory built 95 built LHD Small turbo Escort Cosworth built for the Italian market. Also! its a Italian Monte which explains the wheels! was originally Petrol Blue and should have the Monte interior, Air Con and a passenger airbag.
What a bargain! Get it back to Petrol blue

Yep the Italian Monte or Commemorative model where part of the 200 limited models but where Petrol Blue and had no number plaque in the dash or Monte stickers which makes them extremely hard to trace

"its a Italian Monte" thats that mean it's one of the limited edition?

The Monte interior consists of Grey cloth seats with raven flow (red/blue/purpley flame effect) middle sections and Recaro stitched on the back of the front seats and 'Motorsport' stitched on the inner front seat bolsters. An alloy gear knob, a chrome handbrake button and a airbag steering wheel that has a diamond shaped perforated hand grips.

yeh the exhaust hole was the first thing i noticed. looks awful.
also could do with a front splitter, first thing i bought for my car, just dont look right with out it!

Not all pics showing?

well mate, looks like you have a very amazing bargin. 3000 euros well spent. with the extra cash u saved (compared to what it really worth) get a full respray back to original and sort the monte trim.

then you will have one amazing car

Ps Bullet, clay bared and used the detailing products u advised me on, it looks like a different car! thanks

I was thinking about doing some work on it, but now i will definitely spend the money on it in order to restore it ...

I have no idea what was the owner thinking when he decide to change the color to that horrific light green

in my opinion there is no need to change anything to a standard escort cosworth, it just looks perfect as it is out of the factory.

Paul Ripley thanks for the PM

To right, standard is best Id dare say mine is quicker and smoother power delivery than some tuned examples.

No i love all cossies 700bhp or standard. its just that as mines only done 35k, i feel it should be standard. thats why ive just spent £100 on the crap ford sound system. Also another reason for me putting it back to standard is its cheaper.

Oh steve i know 2, forget surnames, does he work at travis perkins, had a girlfriend called jo? all the builders call him "hairdresser"? he has a yellow convertible megan

or is it steve, who now goes out with the same jo , has a mr2. hes a top bloke, went for a chinky with him last week. he gave me a free month old dishwasher. jos my wifes best friend.

christ sorry post hijack alert

can anyone else only see 2 pics of the car? id love to see more. still cant believe you just bought a rareest of rare es cos for peanuts
