Sure this has been asked before - but what oil do people recommend putting in their cossies?

I've got a YBP that's just turned 80k. Ford recommend 10W40 I think, and I have always used this before, but is that the most appropriate given the higher mileage?

10W50 more like, Ford say 5w50 from new but how many are new these days.

I use Shell Helix in mine. To be honest, any decent branded oil will be fine, but youll get mixed opinions on the grade, depending on the car/engine/mileage.

i use mobil 1 motorsport 15w/50. i found anything thinner and it rattles on startup.

Any good quality synthetic of that grade will be fine - just change it regularly .

The best (IMO) is Silkolene ProS 10w50, but this is for a car that is used aggressively, as it is VERY shear stable and doesn't degrade at high temps .

With that mileage I'd be using a 60 weight, like Millers, when these engines were thrown together the tolerances were nowhere near as tight as todays engines, that NEED a thinner oil a modern engine has around 3 thou bore clearance, the alloy pistons on modern engines, a lot also contain a massive metal inner part and are known as steel strapped, these have a 1 to 1 1/2 thou clearance, the reason for the steel strapping is so they don't expand quicker/more than the bores walls, as they would seize otherwise, this is one reason for thinner oils, another being emissions and economy.
Mobil 1 will be drunk big time, as it thins way too much, Pro S is the best really for normal money, although FUCHS is better, my choice would be SUNOCO RACING if you can get it.
I use pro s as it is easy to get and good price, get mine from matt lewis.

Cool thanks for all the advice. I have been thinking that I was using an oil that was too thin given the mileage - it seems to drink a bit these days.

I'll get something thicker and see how that goes

i went to ford today to get new oil and filter...they gave me 5w 40 full synthetic... for my st escos.. ? this oil will be right wont it? cheers liam

I use Castrol 10w60 on mine for years, with no problems.

Thats what I have been using in the past. It was OK when the cars were new, - but it seems a bit thin when the miles start to build up. You might find the oil consumption is on the high side but it shouldn't do any harm.

I've got Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w50 for mine now based on a few recommendations. I couldn't fine Silkolene locally. I'll report back how it gets on but I expect I won't have to top up as often.

They used 5w50 Fully Synth from new, 5w40 will be too thin when it gets hot so you'll have lower oil pressure (not a good thing). You may find its too thin from cold as well but it depends on the condition of your engine.

Take it back & get 10w50, not from Ford either.

I,ve used 5/40 ford fully synthectic and its been fine,no rattles on start up and oil pressure fine.

ill give it a go, if i find oil pressure lower than b4 i will switch to 10w 50

No 2 engines are the same so you have to see what works best for yours.

Personally I wouldn't run 5w40 as it doesn't meet the spec for a new engine let alone one with a few miles under its belt.
