i presume for strength, like a strut brace.they must have put them on due to the lack of preformance on the saff 4x4 in the rallying i would think.it wouldve been another aid to stiffen the car and get it round the corners properly.
i could be way off though

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!

i do not think they are for stiffening.
i think they are for cooling,it would lead of hot air from the engine bay and out in fresh air. i may be wrong as well,,,but i cant see how it could be a strenght issue maybe we are all wrong..and they just put it there cause they didnt have anywhere else to put it,

No, I think he means the slots in the actual inner wings, sort of underneath the abs/master cyl gubbins, and the same the other side. Look like cooling type vents to me.

The "gills" are where the air is extracted from the engine bay and exits out of the back of the vents in the front wings, so is to aid cooling

The pass side was rotten there and down onto the bulkhead so I cut all that area out and welded in fresh metal. Drivers side was a little soft so I did similar. It was because of a previous bulkhead swap that had created a water trap the way it was done.
Knew I should have asked the question before though not to worry as ive already thought of a way to replace them
