Need to change my cambelt on small turbo cos and reading the ford service manual you need a special tool to remove the bottom crank pulley

Is this something I need to make up or does someone manufacturer a tool for this job ?

Any other tips or advice would be appreciated

You don't need to remove it, there is a flange on the pulley that prevents the belt sliding of, get a pair of Mole grips on it and bend it slightly, just needs about 2" of it done....thats how mine was done, whether it liked it or not.

If pulley has same thing as 2wd cos it has three holes which are tapped for and extractor which is only a piece of metal with one large threaded hole in centre, and three more set around this that locate in the threaded holes in pulley, bolts are put in these and the large centre bolt is turned to bear on crank nose thus drawing off the pulley.
They come up on ebay from time to time but are easy to make your own if not.

What's it called? Is it a woodruff key?

No it is called a PULLER that's all, there was one on ebay yesterday £25 +£5 p+p.
A woodruff key is what goes into things like crank pulleys cam pulleys etc as a means of locating pulley wheel and shaft together it looks like a crescent shape or half circular piece of metal, and slots in a groove in the shaft of whatever it is holding to pulley wheel.

Never thought to look under PULLER heading. He would sell alot more of these if he listed it under ESCORT COSWORTH header.

The pulley removal tool I have bought from ebay says it is suitable for pulleys with M6 threads cast/machined in it.
Looking at my pulley the threads look more like a M8????
Has anyone got a pulley laying around they can check the size, as my one is still fitted and can't jack the car up at the moment to have a good look.
Are all the cosworth pulleys the same? mine is a small turbo with A/C

I think they edge of the hole is chamfered so look bigger as it is just at the end but not the threads, I am sure they are 6mm though.
Would be worth running a tap down them first with grease on to clear them out, then when done if you leave some bolts in holes with loads of coppaslip it will stop them crudding up again, so next change just remove bolts left in put on puller etc, job jobbed as it were.

I was right the small turbo pulley has M8 theads, but luckily the crank pulley remover I bought of ebay just needs drilling out as the holes line up!
I don't like the idea of leaving bolts in the pulley as it might throw it out of balance. Probably best to smear a little grease on the threads and leave it at that.

How tight should you do the cam belt as the Ford book speaks of another special tool to set it up....
