Default Fual cap probs!!

Hi all

Anyone ever had problems with there filler cap? Its the old style (non flap ones).

The key had been tight in it for a couple months now and when i removed it today it would not go back on. The key turns a wee bit but the white collar bit on the cap will not turn to the lock posistion. Iv tried WD40 and veriouse release oils but it feels more like a mechanical problem in the lock.

Can these caps still be bough from ford?

Any info much appreciated

a ford parts man told me you can strip them and clean them up.
its fiddely and a right pita but once mastered its easy, you could always
try giving it a real good wd40 and a smack to try to shock it.
the best thing to keep it maintained is good grease,as the wd dries up
eventually,hence the problem

yep its a common fault with them if not greased, like i say if
regularly wd40'd it will be ok, but grease lasts a lot longer.
i have knackerd a few escort keys turning them too hard when
the thing has seized.
while you have the quality grease out its worth doing the door locks
and the boot, and the door hinges too

I seem to remember bieng told from a while back that the keys can be read just by looking at them the degree of angle of the cut is gauged from one to four and it has a number of different cuts so if you look along the key you can read the key number something like 13452 i dont know how true this is. by the way i had the same problem with my fuel cap and i stripped it and greased it up all ok now.

My fuel cap problem is a lot more serious than yours, whenever I drive "enthusiastically" fuel will actually end up spilling out of the cap and all over the rear fender

Another mate of mine has the same problem, I'm assuming it's a common fault with large turbo fuel cap

instead of using syntetic oil...you can also use ATF oil..automatic transmission fluid.that works perferctly.

yep you can if you know what your doing read ford keys from
approx 88 onwards, read it then go straight down the main dealer and
get one cut

with mk5 escort caps and van caps i found that some worked with any key, that got round the problem
of having a seperate key,i think it was putting the tumblers in a certain
sequence that did it

ok, went through this palarva not so long ago..

done 2 keys with stiff cap.

So

went to fords, to get new cap (outside casing, where spring is), but after 3 caps order, not 1 of them was the same, despite the right FINIS No.

I managed to get a full set of locks off ebay for Ł40 with keys, so im in the process of changing all locks, but first i change the cap barrel, and use the new key (obviously) and its now fine.
So if you can get a full lock for as cheap as me, it may be the easiest option, plus you get nice new locks and keys.

hope this helps..

plus i wd40 my old one and did didley squat. so went for the whole new lock set.

strip it and grease it, fook paying Ł65 for new ones when there is nothing wrong with it. so a new Ł65 set wont do the same eventually. i think so.

thats ok if you havent knackered the barrel with all the prying.

eventually will just sieze up and thats a fookin nightmare beleive me.

The boot lock will be the next to sieze if its not already.

Been There.

But then you do get the added bonus of it taking another 10 years to get to the stage its at now.

Unless you grease it every year.

its got to be a better way.

new keys new locks cant get better than that.

Did you replace all the locks mate? (2 doors, boot, fuel cap, ingniton).

I live in falkirk so it shouldnt be a problem to get new locks from them. Iv still to strip my existing fuel cap but it deffinatly feels more of a mechanical fault within it rather than just being tight.

Yes m8.

i changed all them for new ones and it made a big difference
there was instantly no wear on the ignition and cap was like new trust me m8 it really is worth doing and all feel nice and tight when you use them.

you even get the bonus of having all original ford keys which kinda adds
to the apperance of the vehicle.

pm me if you want to get in contact ill send you my details
we can have a chat or even meet up if you want

Cheers

You have to use loads of WD-40.

or better still WURTH 2040 release oil is the buisness.

you might need a pair of vice grips depending on how tight it is.

and just work back and forward for what seems like an eternity use plenty of release oil when working it will clean out the rust mostly
using firm pressure it will eventually start to go free then kinda force it a little more and you should get it free. it usually takes ages.

you can also spray it in the hole and leave it for a couple hours and repeat the process until you get results.

Hope this helps m8.

My cap got so knackered I actually filled the car up & then couldn't get the key out of the cap again. So there I was, standing on the forecourt like an idiot, fortunately an idiot that had, by chance, got his spare keys with him.

Moral, grease 'em people.

I got a new barrel for my existing cap, cost way less that 65 quid though.

& they fitted it for me.

Iv ended up buyin a new lock barel from ford for 20 odd quid.

Unfortunatly i had to build the lock to my key which took a good hour of fannyin about. Got there in the end and am well chuffed now. Put a bit grease in there once it was built and it workin perfect.

One prob tho ... i lost the wee circlip that holds the barel to the cap I'll have a look in the stores at work for one tomorro
