Default Escort Cosworth advice!

Looking to buy a Escort Cosworth, looked at one but found signs of mold on the carpets, front back and boot? is this a really bad sign? the owner said he had a little bit of rust under the back arch which has been plated up? and it had been resprayed? also has a new cam belt, turbo, clutch and gear box? does this sound like a car to stay away from? good points, it does have full history and original panels......? advice would be great.

Also I am part exing a E36 3.0 M3 in for a Cosworth? would I be making the right choice, the BMW I have is a mint example and dont want to make a mistake?

Cheers

Mark

OK thats cool, is there anything I should be looking for that is known problems on the Cossys? is there certain rust places and engine noise and wear I should be looking for?

Its impossible for any of us to say if its worth it without seeing it mate. Could be worth anything from £8k-£15k.

It may have just been stood a while and got damp inside. The mould could be a problem and it may have been water damaged at some point though, and from experience its so hard to get rid of mould form an interior once its started. Youll have to strip the whole lot out and clean and dry it properly and it may get rid of it if your lucky. You may end up having to get a complete 2nd hand interior.

As said though, you have to look at a few so you can then compare them and make your desicion based on others.

one thing I dont get with these cars, there ment to be collectors cars but so many of them seem to have been abused and mistreated? is this common or have I got the wrong impression?

Yep theres far more abused ones out there than decent looked after examples. Good ones are getting hard to find now so if your picky, then youll be in for a long wait in my opinion.

Have you looked on rsownersclub? Couple of good looking ones on there now.

Out of interest, what sort of budget do you have?

I have looked every where, and as for my budget its kind of stretching the more it goes on, was looking for a cheaper one in the region of 10 to 12k but if I cant find a good one in the bracket then I might have to look at spending some more. Is there any secret places where they are for sell? I have looked on pistonheads, autotrader, rsownersclub, classic car/race car direct? also seen some in the garages but I think most of them are a little over priced.

Was just going to suggest that one too.

I think with your budget youll have to accept that they may need a few £££ spending on it, so it would be better to leave a few £££ spare to spend on it. In fact that goes for whatever your budget is really mate.

i think sometimes it's being in the right place at the right time. if you're unsure it maybe worth asking a passion ford member that lives close to the car to go with you for a second opinion . also have you tried e-bay there are always 1 or 2 on there .

good luck and i hope you find a good one

That web page link is quality, will keep my eyes on that one as well.
It had a small patch in the back drivers side wheel arch that had been welded? is this common? and it seems weird how its only one side that has been done?

Cheers again guys for yor help and advise

I think I need to walk away from this car, its had so much work in the last couple of months, I think its just the owner trying to get some money back on it.. There was a small bit of sludge in the oil cap but I mean really small, maybe this is a sign the head went and hasnt been serviced? not sure. I will take some one with me and get this car properly looked at before I even think of going near it...

Cheers Dave, I though it was a little bit odd myself. The car shows no signs of rust in the normal areas (battery tray, back spoiler/boot) and the seals seemed rust free as well.

I sniffed a problem when the owner said I will do anything you want to it.... sounds a bit desprit for a garage to say that...

Still there are lots more out there due to that web page so will keep my eyes on that one.

Is the head light conversion pricey? they look so much better with the twins on them?

Cheers

thats what I would like to see, a friend of mine sold one with a knackered engine and turbo, a bit rusty, sold as spares etc and he still got 7500 for it... but I would like to find a nice engine that just needs some cosmetic things, that will do me.. dont mind putting in some elbow greese. any one got one like this looking at this forum?
