A steering fluid change will help,if it is a whirring loud groan type noise(sorry bout the desription). If its got any knocking mechanical noise its probably in the rack, cossie steering is very quiet..........or should be

the knock could possibly be the top suspension cups, they are prone for breaking in the middle and then you get a creak or knock from the steering, ive had it on both my escort cozzys you have to remove the top suspension nut and plate from under the bonnet to see it,its the one underneath that breaks, common problem.
its only a 2 minute job to take a look,il get a pic up if yr unsure which bit i mean...

right, the first pic shows how the top of yr suspension looks under the bonnet right?,you take that 19mm nut and plate off and the second pic shows the suspension top i was talking about that cracks, take a good look at it,the arrow shows where they normally break, thats just a dirty line in the pic by the way,on my other esc coz i had to replace them twice in 3 years. mine look ok for now by the way,i checked today.
if they appear to be in good order then it could be the steering rack in need of recon but check these first...

sorry the pics are a little dark, was dropping dark when i got home from work.

I seem to remember that I have seen a pic of them, think it was very early this year. ZOO had a sale of some kind, but there was a pic of them where they where welded on the backside (I think)
I have wrote to him via PM...

Compbrake have something to.. I am just not sure it standard spec, but uprated. cause they only mention the bearing as special.
