escos clutch ratchet and cable
hi all,
in the last 2 years i've snapped 3 clutch cables.
the previous 2 were aftermarket items and the last 1 was only on the car for 4 months before breaking!
strange thing is,they all have broken about 3 inches from the pedal end.
is it possible that i'm not fitting them right? also, the pedal ratchet seems to click quite regularly since fitting the new (genuine ford) cable.
is this normal? i'm hoping its just the new cable settling in. any input appreciated as i'm paranoid as hell about breaking another! cheeRS.

with the ones snapping i can only put it down to either not very good (after market) cables or is your clutch stiff?? that could put extra strain on the cable maybe if it wasnt good quality thats why.saying that i had a ford one snap once.
as for the clicking,it shouldnt do that mate, when first fitted maybe as it ratchets its self up and adjusts automatically, sounds to me like the ratchets worn and on the way out
easy job just a bit awkward to get at and about £6 from fords if i remember correctly

dave, as far as i'm aware, all is standard on the clutch side as i'm only running stage 1.
the pedal certainly isn't light, but its not as heavy as the ap racing clutch i had in my series2.
this is the first genuine cable i've fitted so we'll just have to see how it goes!
i did look into uprated cables but no one seems to do any.

cheers for the reply L3 COS. in your opinion,do you think that if my ratchet is on the way out,it could somehow be the cause of my cables snapping?
i'm guessing if its not working correctly it could be putting extra load on the cable?

i doubt it mate to be honest, the only way it could do that was if it adjusted up too much (which i dont thinks possible anyway) putting extra strain on the cable, but surely if that was the case it wouldnt of been releasing properly and yr clutch would of been slipping,so nah i think it was just down to the cable.
the ratchets only nylon anyway and they do wear over time, ive changed loads of them on all ages of escorts,transits,etc..
put a new ratchet and cable on and i think youl be fine mate..
