Olympic bar is 20kg yeah.

Different makes of smith machines have varying weights of bars/resistance levels.

10kg-20kg at a guess. I can lift heavier on the smith than i can with the olly bar so the one at my gym is definately lighter than 20kg.

The smith machine in my gym has all different bars and pipes and weighs a lot! Most people shoulder press with no weight and it's enough.

the smith machine in are gym has the extensions on it the silver wide looking things.i can bench heavy on smith than the free weight bench press.alot of people say anyone can do it on the smith machine and that the free weight bench press is harder.i can do x2 20kg plates and x1 10kg either side but on the free weight bench press can only do x2 20kg plates either side, thats what made me ask how much do the bars weight becuase i can do more on one and less on the other

the bar on the smith machine being lighter is only a small part of why you can lift more using it.

The main factor which allows more weight to be lifted is your not using your connecting muscle or even your normal muscles to the same extent as you would normally, as the smith machine helps support the weight and guide you through a set range of movement. On a free weight you control the full weight and movement so in turn you grow more and gain strength quicker.

I use it for my incline press (Gonna stop now), but I think I may keep using it for my shoulder press behind the neck as I like the idea of something keeping me in range of motion to avoid it going wrong and injuring myself. What do you think to that?
