Default Right, it's time to join the gym.....

I've been wanting to get in shape for a few years now and I've reached a point where looking in the mirror depresses the hell out of me

I'm currently 5' 7" and weighing in at a hefty 17 stone

I remember being 15 and a half and thinking "woah that's way too much". Gonna join the gym but I don't want it all to be in vain. Now, the only unhealthy meals I have at home (when the old dear doesn't fancy cooking ) are usually fish and chips on a wednesday and a chinese (usually deep fried chicken in OK sauce + chips) on a thursday. I know that's not too good but other than that my meals are quite healthy.

Every day at work I have sandiwches with low fat butter in white bread, that are usually filled with either meat slices or fish. A can of diet pop and a bag of low fat crisps.

Should I be seriously looking to change any of that? I tried having brown bread but it was awful and I couldn't get used to it

I dislike the taste of veg apart from peas, sweetcorn and potatoes and I hate eating fruit

I like fruit juice and reckon I could drink a smoothie but eating fruit just grinds me down and doesn't appeal to me in any way if I get hungry. I will sometimes have a microwave pizza and chips after 10pm when I get hungry, which i know I should cut out and sometimes have a bag of crisps at work that's not part of my lunch. If I could bring myself to eat fruit instead I would......

Any advice appreciated. Don't wanna go to the gym and not get any results as it would just be soul destroying for me

Cheers folks.

check the threads on here about calculating your reccomended calorie input to maintain your current frame..

then construct a diet plan with CLEAN foods that bring your calories under your figure

get rid of all fatty fast foods, saturated fats, fizzy drinks, beer .. you name it. Just eat healthily and maintain your just under calorie routine

Combine with some cardio excercise during the week.. , , maybe some weight training to tone up the flab and you will be well on your way

keep the protien up.. lean meats such as chicken and turkey

good luck mate.. its worth it!

yes! Try wholemeal bread.. and butter is a no no.. Fill the bread (try burgen aswell ) with lettuce, tomatoe, cucumber, peppers and some grilled turkey or chicken.. I do this and add spices whilst cooking

I dislike the taste of veg apart from peas, sweetcorn and potatoes and I hate eating fruit

oh dear.. you will have to change this.. veg intake is very important.. you dont need loads.. just enough to compliment your meal.

II get hungry. I will sometimes have a microwave pizza and chips after 10pm when I get hungry, which i know I should cut out
this is the worst thing to do.. you are eating crap.. FAR too late. Your body wont have time to burn it off and will store as fat as you sleep! cut this out ASAP! eat no later than 8pm imo!

As Dave says Jay, I'm afraid your diet is by no means perfect. It maybe worth trying some new foods to see if you can get out of the habit of having the bad ones currently in your diet.

Think about replacing your sandwiches with chicken, tuna, lean meat past, rice etc. Make it up in bulk so you don't have to cook it each night.

I'd have to eat it cold at work though. There's no microwave

Is flavoured water better than diet pop then? I'm willing to cut out the eating after 10pm if I can, it's jsut that I get so hungry at times. I'm never going to be able to stick to a perfect diet, but I am willing to try and eat something that will at least give me a fighting chance of getting into decent shape.

A shake with cottage cheese in?

I did like cottage cheese last time I had it. Told my mum last night that we need a blender

Where do i find instructions on what I need and how to make these shakes?

If you force yourself not to eat after 10pm (or 8pm if possible), after a week or two you'll probably find that you won't feel the need to, you just need to get out of the habit and you won't find yourself getting as hungry.

Good luck

Also if you final evening meal has some complex carbs (pasta/rice etc) then this should help avoid the hunger pangs.

Ask yourself if you meal portions are large and infrequent. If you stuff yourself at your evening meal you'll feel hungry as your stomach empties. You need to train yourself to eat little and often.

If you make up the right sauce, cold food can be quite tasty

Jay I used to be the same as you but I used to eat what I wanted and when I wanted it. I wouldlt touch fruit. I used to have about 6 cans of coke a day too when I was younger (how bad is that!!).

Once I started to eat a bit healthier I did enjoy it especially as I was feeling differently and I hope that if you do change your diet you will feel the benefits and wont want to got back.

I never used to like brown bread but thats all I have now unless they dont have any. I normally get a (sliced boiled) egg salad,or chicken salad or a tuna sweetcorn sandwich from the sandwich van that comes to our work.

I normally have a low fat yogurt about 1030, a sandwich and piece of fruit at 1 and then a couple of bananas later if I'm going to the gym. I have something light when I get back from the gym cos its normally after 8pm.

Try out a new diet and see how you go, you might even grow to like it!

Let us know how it goes, theres plenty of people on here that can advise you and give you tips and some good ideas of what to eat.

Cheers folks, I appreciate the help

I'm really set in my current ways lol so it's a challenge ahead of me, that's for sure.

I love boiled eggs actually, would I be ok to eat a couple of those if I get peckish late-ish?
