Trimming up AND building size
Food for thought
From personal experience - whilst the two are not mutually exclusive trying to do both at the same time will lead to a comprimise on both fronts.
People new to training always have a honeymoon period and can experience sizable change but unfortunately things slow down with time.
Pro Bodybuilders have off seasons where their sole goal is to get bigger, then when it comes to competition will trim down and change their training (lighter, more reps). They don't try and do both at once(not all anyway)
There are varying extremes of how they go about it. Some might only put on an extra 10-20lbs in the off season, but others balloon by 50lbs or more.
The added weight and support around the joints reduces injuries when lifting progressively heavier weights.
This is not meant to be a downer and is more relevant if you are trying to pack on some size(trying to get leaner will restrict your bodies nutrients supply). Don't be afraid of adding some extra bodyweight, you just have to make sure it doesn't run away with you.
Obviously if you are changing diet completely from a high fat one, then I'm sure you are going to see some good change on both fronts.
The moral and point I am getting at is to understand your long term goals and then workout the best way forward. If you are trying to pack on size, then the winter months are a good off season and you can be more relaxed on diet(eat enough but not chicken and rice the whole time ) then come summer its an opportunity to trim down, change the diet slightly, and the training. It ends up being a bit of a 2 steps forward, one step back(strength may drop) but in the long term you will be able to build good quality mucsle. Focus on one at a time.
Sometimes I;m a bugger and get caught in a permenant off-season mode, but I really like my food.

great tip
its so contradicting what you hear when you are trying to lose weight and build up muscle at the same time.
I've been doing almost 100% weight training last year and while I managed to bulk up a bit I've still got a lot of fat I've not lost. So this year will focus on more cardio and lighter more reps. Along with a suitable diet - no more raw egg protein shakes

Nice onw paul cheers for the advice.
Im planning on doing another 3-4 months of building
then just adjusting my training towards the end of spring
to a low weight high rep program just to help lose the extra
bit.
Hopefully it will be shirts off in the summer!
Well it would be rude not to

Before you dive in and starting eating Lard do this quick calc
Bodyweight in lbs (14 lbs to a stone) X 16 = daily calories to maintain weight. Check your daily intake at least matches this. Add 500 cals to make sure you are getting enough.
Also with protein - daily amount(grams) = bodyweight in lbs x 1.5
So for you @ 140lbs
140*16 = 2240cals basic + 500 for weight gain
140*1.5 = 210gms of protein (equivalent of approx 4 tins of tuna)
Check you are at getting near the above figures
If you don't progress you must have a really fast metabolism or are doing loads of activity and may need an additonal 500cals a day. In this case if you are struggling to eat all this try some meal replacement shakes in between meals or a decent weightgain formula will help(helps with protein intake too)
Hope this helps

However, I would hate to see how much effort AND drugs go into getting him into competition shape.
To really see how big these guys are, take a look at the size of their wrists and then see how much everything balloons out - Unbelievably massive! especially true of lee priest because he is short and has short limbs. Arms are phenomenal

Totally impressive, when you see these guys in the flesh it blows your mind. I saw Dorian off season at british contest. He was frightening
Also went to an Ian Harrison seminar at a gym watching him train arms, again he was pretty big
