Default XR3i MFi to Mondeo 2.0 Blacktop

Hi all,

Ive had a XR3i for several months now and have decided that i want to put in a mondeo 2.0 blacktop lump.

I have recently purchased a 2.0 mondeo with 66k on the clock full history and a cambelt change last year 4k ago.

My XR3i is MFi so that apparently complicates things slightly it doesnt run and ecu like the EFi does so i have issues regarding fuel pumps etc.

Aquired so far.
Engine 66k
Loom from the same '99 Mondeo
Desk and Deep pre pats ECU - which is best or are they both the same
Haynes manual for:
Mondeo mk1
Mondeo mk2
Escort mk4
Escort mk5
Escort mk6
Focus mk1

I have also discovered an alternator adaptor bracket that will let the water pump run the other way and lower the alternator.

So questions i have are mainly wiring and exhaust.

I have seen that i can use a Focus ST170 exhaust manifold somewhere as this will leave enough clearance at the front not to foul anything.

Wiring wise from what i can understand by looking at the many diagrams in the haynes manuals is that i will run the mk2 mondeo zetec engine loom then either try and fit the fusebox or make my own up and splice in the wiring from the interior loom.

Any help appreciated. Photos below!

Cheers
Andy

So ive been on the purchasing train:

Escort Zetec silvertop 1.8gti flywheel purchased. Weighed an actual ton! Currently off being refaced and lightened and balanced picks to follow when i get it back

Ordered new CVH alternator brackets that lower the alternator into the bay and also reverses the throw of the waterpump in one hit

Thrown in with the deal was the bracket to adjust the CVH engine mount to make it a hybrid CVH/Zetec mount like the below examples

Had to make a decision on a new clutch as im not running mega power i thought best to go to stage 1 giving me a chance to add a bit down the line should i need it.

I do seem to have an issue with ECU's i now have three! 2 x DESK 1 x DEEP also have my eye on a couple of others that i think may go cheap.

Next steps i have found some Cams but im not sure if these ecus can be mapped or not so currently investigating. I know i should run Omex or similar but i dont want to go that way just yet.

I will post more when i get the flywheel back

Sooooo, More parts! Had these 4 16" Mondies in stock so thought in for a penny in for a pound. Having these refurbished in a nice bright silver not the original silver.

New silvertop sump gasket

New Stage 1 Clutch

When thinking brakes theres only one way to go 300mm! Bought some mk3 Mondeo calipers and then set about what to use as friction. As i used these on my old Focus ST170 i thought hmmm why not! Brembo pads and disks!

New Clutch Cable

New Track Rod ends, Just because lol. No need for them but for the price might as well change them when they are off!

And of course last but not least 4 new plugs to go with the oil and filters i have in stock

If the Mondeo had a manual gearbox use the Mondeo ecu.

Its much better than the pre pats and you get obd2 diagnostics and you have all the matching sensors.

It was mate, but that would mean installing pats into the interior of the car. The end game will be to swap it out to Omex and cam it but this is a way to get it up and running and drivable.

Have you done it bud? I have been thinking about it and may do it depending on how i find taking the loom out. Would be nice to have it disabled when the cars not in use!

I dont know if anyone still reads threads on here or not but some more parts purchased for my little XR3i.

A nice set of recaros my cars meant to be 88spec but its all 90spec inside already so im not going to mess about with it.

A new dial surround mine has a lovely split in it so in for a penny in for a pound!

A new RS Turbo bonnet with vents. Dull horrible paint but rot free YAY!!

Last but not least a new bootlid again horrible paint but rot free!

The cars currently at a body shop. Its having new inner arches, new outer arches, new front panel, new cross member and a new battery tray as well as having the windscreen repaired in both bottom corners all told in a weeks time she should be rust free!!!

Nice to know the two tally up! I put a post up last night as im not sure if this is in the right section or not most forums ive used have a restoration section.

Yes silvertop sump to the blacktop engine something to do with fouling the starter and where the exhaust runs.

It's not a straight swap, jus use the black top sump and cut off the bits in the way of starter and offside driveshaft. I have pics if you need them.

Got lots planned progress wise when its back i hope go make some myself rather than just what the body shop has done.

Haha she has a wee bit of rust tucked away here and there. I was speaking to the body shop earlier they said yeh ok the front panels rotten as a pear and the arches are on their way but its a good car really. Which filled me with a bit of confidence.

The aims to have it back by the end of next week fully welded and primed. Im not painting the bits ive had done, as that will wait for a full respray at the end of the year probably.

Sad to say not much progress i have been waiting for the car to come back from its welding so i have been on the parts gathering train once again!

I have bought a fully rebuilt S2 LSD gearbox my gearbox has an issue with 2nd gear im 90% sure its selector related as its looser than a clowns pocket! Wont complain for the money i paid!

My mate started to strip down his mondeo loom the other day. Which i will also be doing what a pain in the backside that looks to be. Has anyone completed this loom installation? Im looking to retain the obd2 port and the pats in mine. Although i do have 3 pre pats mondeo ecus!!

Thanks for looking!
